Basketball Free Picks - September 18, 2008

Today's WNBA Basketball Picks:
Game: Connecticut at New York (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on New York -1 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The Eastern Conference Semifinals will begin in New York as the Connecticut Sun take on the New York Liberty. The Sun opened the season looking like the class of the WNBA with an 8-1 start, but the finish was a very pedestrian 13-12 mark, which included losses in three of their last four games. What is most eye-opening here is the Sun has failed to beat a team with a winning record on the road since June 20! They have averaged losing these games by 6.5 points a game. The Liberty suffered two losses to the Sun during their opening 8-1 run, but when these teams met later in the season, the Liberty won at Connecticut by six points, as a 5.5 point dog. The Liberty has not only bridged the gap between them and the Sun at the beginning of the season, but is valued here at home especially in a game they just basically have to win to get the cover.
Game: San Antonio at Sacramento (9:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Sacramento +1.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
San Antonio completed its season with a 5-0 run and an overall mark of 24-10. The Silver Stars appear to be the best team in the WNBA, but at the same time find themselves in a situation where they have failed to log a win the entire season. While they have gone a spectacular 15-2 at home, they have been 9-8 on the road. They have failed to log a win against a team in the Western Conference on the road all season and are favored here? Sacramento is one of the most improved teams in the WNBA. They opened the season at 8-11, but have surged forward to 10-5 since. That 10-5 mark includes an 8-0 mark at home where they have been unbeatable. They beat San Antonio by nine in their only home game against the Silver Stars, and that was before they started coming together as a team. This looks like a great valued spot for the Monarchs against a San Antonio team that has yet to get it done against the winning west teams.
