Wnba Free Pick - June 24, 2008

Today's WNBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Sacramento at Indiana (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Indiana -7.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

It is never a good sign for a team in the WNBA to have it going and then have a three-game home stretch and drop two of the three games by a combined 24 points. That has to be a concern for the Monarchs as they take to the road to face Indiana tonight. Indiana has lost twice on its home floor, but to teams that were better than them in Detroit and San Antonio. They have torn apart the sub .500 teams at home, not just this year but throughout the years. We look for the Fever to continue that mastery on their home floor and come away with a comfortable double-digit win.

This game should be a good one tonight in Connecticut as the Sun host the Detroit Shock in Uncasville. These teams are both tied for the best record in the WNBA at 10-3, and the winner will stand alone with the best record and also atop the Eastern Conference standings. Top matchups like this often get the defensive juices flowing as games of this magnitude are won on the defensive end of the court. This is the first of two games in three days for these teams and you can bet the intensity level will be running high, and defense is going to be the calling card for both teams. The Eastern Conference lead will be on the line as they will meet three times in the next six games, adding a lot of meaning here. Expect this one to be of playoff intensity and that has us feeling good about the UNDER here and that is our play.

Washington has played most of its schedule to scores in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. What they haven't been able to do is dictate pace against teams like Phoenix and Connecticut that take the game right at you, turning it into a full-court contest. The result is two losses and 357 points scored or nearly 180 per game, and 191 when these teams met earlier in the season. The other 10 games have shown the Mystics producing just 132 points per game. This is a stark contrast and points out their inability to slow down a high-octane offense. Phoenix can score, but they also have allowed 80+ in all but one game, and that was 79. With the problems the Mystics have had defending quick teams this one points to a road win for the Mercury as well as a game going OVER the total.

Minnesota is one of very few teams that have not displayed the home-court prowess of most of the WNBA teams. They are just 3-3 on their own floor. After a 5-1 start and feeling good, Minnesota has now dropped five straight games and three of those on their home floor and are mentally in the tank. New York has been in a much different mindset. After a dismal 1-3 beginning to the '08 campaign the Liberty have it going now winning five of their last seven including an explosion last time out against Phoenix, scoring 105 and winning by 33 points! This is a huge edge to the Liberty mentally, as the Lynx are just in a bad state of mind after five straight losses. Good place for the moneyline and the Liberty to steal one on the road.

The battle for WNBA bragging rights in the state of Texas happens in San Antonio tonight as the road-weary Houston Comets come to town. Outside of league doormat Atlanta, the Comets carry the worst road record in the WNBA at 1-6. As difficult as the road has been this task is monumental as the Silver Stars have been a flawless 6-0 at home. Sophia Young has had her way scoring 17.5 points per game, backed by 52% shooting from the floor. San Antonio doesn't waste many free throw attempts as they connect on over 80% for the season. Houston has only had one game on the road against a top team in Detroit, and was bounced by 19 points. They have shown the inability to stop some top teams as Detroit put up 84 points, NY 81 and Indiana 84. All three of these teams have had their way offensively against this Houston team. We see blowout potential here and also see the Silver Stars posting in the 80s, so we also like the OVER in this one.
