Wnba Betting Predictions - June 19, 2009

Today's WNBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Chicago at Connecticut (7:05 PM Eastern)

The Chicago Sky is off to their best start in franchise history, mostly do to a favorable early schedule. The Sky has finished as a sub-.500 team in all three of their previous WNBA seasons. They have opened at 3-1, for one reason. They are shooting a lights-out 53.5% from behind the arc. The landscape changes for the Sky as after three home wins, and a road loss, they now will play eight of their next 11 on the road. Their sole loss was a 17-point setback at Minnesota, leaving the Sky at 14-38 on the road in their franchise history, and just 4-13 a year ago. They are just 1-4 in five games played at Connecticut. The Sky is not as good as they have looked as anytime a team shoots 53.5% from beyond the arc, they are going to fall. I like the Sun in this one.

The San Antonio Silver Stars have not looked like the same team they did from a year ago. They needed a big finish from Becky Hammond to help them to their first win of the season, but she will not be on the floor for this one. That takes away a defender from the Silver Stars and opens the door for a Liberty team that will be going against a shorthanded Silver Star team that has already played 23 of 32 OVER after a loss. The Liberty has had their best offense on display vs. the West as they have toppled the total in nine of their last 12. This has also been an OVER dominated series in the games played in the Big Apple, as five of the last seven have soared over the total. I like this one to do the same and go OVER the total.

The Detroit Shock have won three WNBA Championships, but the resignation of Coach Bill Laimbeer and their early play has a lot more question marks on this edition than those of the past. The Shock has issues inside as they will still be without the services of three key players, Cherl Ford, Kara Braxton and Plenette Pierson. Indiana is a very good shooting team, and has had two games draining nine shots from beyond the arc - no other team has done it even once. The Fever also has a lot of revenge motives here as they have been knocked out of the playoffs by the Shock in each of the last three seasons. This time they have an advantage with a lot of Shock players not dressing for this one. I'll go with Indiana in this one, and am also backing the OVER here. The Fever have not been held to under 73 points this season, and going back to the last seven a year ago, are now averaging just shy of 80 points per game. The offense has translated well on the road, producing seven of the last eight to the OVER. These teams have also played four of their last five in the Motor City to the OVER, so it's the Fever and the OVER in this one.

The Lynx will be without their top player Seimone Augustus for this one who went down with a knee injury Wednesday against Phoenix. We have seen many times, when a team loses a key player they tend to rally in their next game, and I expect the Lynx to do so here. The Seattle Storm has been up and down, prompting star player Sue Bird to say the team has an identity crisis right now - not exactly what you want to hear if you’re behind the Storm. The Lynx still have plenty of offensive weapons, and have rebounded nicely off a loss, at 7-3 ATS. This one has been over-adjusted for the injury, so I'll play on Minnesota here.
