Today's WNBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Connecticut at Indiana (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 141.5 +100 (risk 3 to win 3)

Two of the hottest teams in the WNBA collide tonight in Indiana, as the Connecticut Sun will be in to play the Fever. The Fever is a much-improved team, and has covered their last six games while the Sun, who got off to a sluggish start, has now covered five of six. The Sun had trouble getting the offense going in their first three games where they averaged just 66 points per game. That problem has been rectified as they have now scored 79.8 ppg in their last four. The Fever have topped the 70-point mark in nine of their last 11 at home, as well as allowing 70 ppg at home on the season, and have played to a 13-5 mark to the OVER in their last 18. The last two games between these two clubs have gone OVER this total, and I look for the same here, and will go with the OVER.

The Detroit Shock has been a changed team from a year ago. They are playing without Plenette Pierson who is out for the year, and Kara Braxton who is one game back from a six-game suspension, and not in game shape yet has hurt. The Shock’s offense is near the bottom of the league in points, FG shooting, and three-point shooting, where a year ago they were at or near the top in all three categories. They have dropped all three games on the road, and as bad as the shooting has been, their road numbers are even worse, as they are hitting just 35.3% of their shots on the road, and that won't get it done in any league. They now come to New York to face the top defensive team in the league, in terms of FG percentage defense. The Liberty is the only team in the league holding opponents to under 40% shooting at 38.9%. I don't see the Shock’s offense responding against the top defense in the league, so I'll go with the Liberty here.

This Detroit team is quite a bit different from a year ago. A team that was at or near the top in shooting, three-point shooting, and points per game, is now at or near the bottom in all three categories this year. They have shot 35% on the road as a team, and are facing the Liberty who has defended better than anyone at 38.9%. This is certainly not the ideal setting to get healthy. The Shock has had a good team for several years, but has struggled in New York, even with their good teams at 1-4 ATS in their last five and 5-12 in their last 17. I’m going with New York on the moneyline.

The Sacramento Monarchs have lost six in a row on the season, and have yet to find the win column on the road where they are 0-6. Their problem has not been rebounding, as they are +6 and leading the WNBA off the boards, the problem has been generating offense. The Monarchs, aside from an OT game at Phoenix, are averaging 62.6 ppg in their other five on the road. Minnesota has scored well, but if the Monarchs are near their road average, the Lynx are going to have to put up 100 here to push this one OVER. They will also have to do that without their best player -Simeone Augustus who is out for the season. These teams have met 15 times this decade in Minnesota, and have averaged just 141.7 ppg, and just one of the 15 games has played OVER this number. I look for this one to go UNDER the total.
