Wnba Free Picks - August 29, 2009

Today's WNBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Detroit at San Antonio (3:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on San Antonio -3 (+100) (risk 4 to win 4)

It has been a year of frustration for both of these teams, as both expected to contend again have failed. There is one very big factor at work here and as the season gets long, and teams outside the playoffs are outside looking in, and are used to being in there, begin to look for motivational factors. The Silver Stars have the ultimate motivator here. They dropped all three playoff games to the Shock in a 3-0 sweep, and watched the Shock cut down the nets right in front of them a year ago. You can bet this game will take on a lot more meaning for San Antonio than it will for the Shock who is down to just playing out the string. I'm going with the team that is home, and has the ultimate revenge riding on this game. San Antonio gets the call.

I'm not sure what I can add to this outside of what the logic is behind this pick. All things being equal, this is a very fair line, but they are not equal. The Silver Stars dropped three straight to the Shock last year, and watched helplessly as they cut down the nets right in front of them. Neither of these teams are going anywhere, but one will be sky high, full of energy, and ready to win, and that is the team with the biggest revenge of all riding here. I will go with San Antonio here on the moneyline.

By WNBA standards this line is up there about as far as they usually go. Indiana comes in here at 20-7 and this is as big a favorite as they have been all season, despite the fact they have kind of gone on cruise control, awaiting the upcoming playoffs. That cruise control has left them 3-3 in their last six games. Sacramento has to be given a lot of credit as they started at 3-13 and could have mailed in the rest of the season, but have played hard and fought for wins, improving to a very respectable 6-6 in their last 12. This team has gained confidence, and most of all has obviously not quit on their coach and it would be big for them to win here. Indiana is not exerting the energy at this point with things wrapped up in the east, and this is too many points. I'm going wih Sacramento here.

The Connecticut Sun need a big effort here for two reasons. For one, a huge confidence boost going on the road and beating what is currently the best team in the West, and also they stand a game behind Atlanta for a playoff spot. A loss could be lethal to their playoff hopes, so I certainly expect a strong effort here. Phoenix, at one time at 15-6, has gone the route of Indiana at just 3-3 over their last six. They were also at one time 9-1 at home, but have lapsed to a 1-3 mark since. This team is very vulnerable right now and Connecticut will come in here with a winning mentality because they know the consequence of a loss could kill their playoff hopes. I like Connecticut in this one.
