Wnba Basketball Picks - August 15, 2009We missed on our picks last night, as we are on a mini-slump. We look to break out of it today as we burst onto the WNBA floor with six picks including two 4-unit plays.
![]() Today's WNBA Basketball Picks: The Storm has dropped six straight games to the spread, but remain one of the top teams in the WNBA. They enter this one with a 13-10 mark, and certainly a viable playoff team. I think Atlanta has had their day of value, and now that the oddsmakers have caught up to this team, it's time to turn away from them. I'm not sure if in anyone's Dream, would this game show the Dream favored against Seattle. I still believe the better conference is the West in this league, and getting one of the better teams that you know is hungry for a win, is the way to go in this one. I'm behind Seattle here.Game: Detroit at Indiana (7:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Detroit +6.5 (-105) (risk 3 to win 2.9) This one is like the old movie "Trading Places". The Indiana Fever are looking to be what the Detroit Shcok were a year ago, WNBA Champs, and have certainly looked like that caliber of a team. The Shock have not put together the type of season they had expected, and a coaching change has given them a new identity. The Shock are an improved team from earlier in the season, it just hasn't shown up as much in the win column as they would like. They have been ultra competitive however. There has not been any game of their last seven on the road that the Shock has lost by this spread, except an OT game vs. Phoenix. The other six have resulted in four wins and two losses by just four and five points, so theyt are definately under the radar, and the points offered here are simply too many. The Fever have coughed it up in their last four against a team with a losing record, going 0-4 ATS. I like the Shock to once again stay close.Game: Minnesota at Chicago (8:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Minnesota +2.5 (+100) (risk 4 to win 4) The Sky has played well at home all year at 8-2, but after a 5-0 start, they are just 3-2 in their last five, and a few have been very tight. Minnesota is no slouch on the road as they are the only team in the WNBA that isn't in first place, yet owns a winning road record. This is a Lynx team that has won at Phoenix, at San Antonio, and at Indiana by a total of 42 points, or 14 points a game. Those three teams are 27-6 at home otherwise, so the Lynx seem to get geared-up for these spots, and I think they catch the Sky off guard here. The Sky have been brutal off a straight-up win at just 1-8 ATS in their last nine. They come into this one with apparent struggles against the West as well at 4-10 ATS in their last 14. The Lynx are capable of the upset here, and I'll go with them in this one.Game: Phoenix at San Antonio (8:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on San Antonio -1.5 (-105) (risk 3 to win 2.9) The Phoenix Mercury rely on a fast-paced helter skelter style to take their opponents out of games, and play into their strength. The San Antonio Silver Stars aren't playing the consistent defense that led them to the title game a year ago, but certainly have the personnel to take on the challenge, especially at home for one night. That may especially hold true since they were beaten by this Phoenix team by 12 points just two nights ago on the road. The Silver Stars still seem to be able to get it up against the better teams at 4-1 ATS in their last five, and with revenge as a motive here off a fresh loss, I like them to bow their backs and get this one at home.Game: Los Angeles at Sacramento (10:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Los Angeles +2 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6) Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 140.5 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7) Sacramento has finally gotten something going as this team started 3-14, but has now been a much more respectable 4-3 in their last seven games. The biggest difference is a team that spent a lot of time scoring in the 50s and 60s, is starting to put it together offensively as they are now averaging 80 points per game in those past seven games. How significant? They didn't touch 80 in all their previous games combined seven times, so to be averaging that shows a considerable change. The Spark held this team to 56 and 47 in the first two meetings, but the Monarchs raced for 85 last night. The revenge factor for the Sparks will be working here with the fresh taste of defeat still less than 24 hours old. The Monarchs are just 3-7 ATS after a straight-up win, and the Sparks have been impressive in this series, cashing 10 of the last 14. I like LA here and for this one to go OVER the total as well. Results: 2-4 ![]() WNBA Basketball Picks Resources:
