Wnba Basketball Picks - August 13, 2009

Today's WNBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Seattle at Connecticut (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Game Total OVER 145 -110 (risk 2 to win 1.8)

Neither of these teams resembles what they were a year ago, and has fallen short of expectations. Last year, these teams combined for a 43-25 mark, and this year just 24-19. Connecticut has really been an offensive force of late as they have averaged 84 points per game in their last seven. This Seattle team once led the league in fewest points allowed a year ago, has allowed 76 ppg in their last six on the road. These teams average playing in the 150s this season so looking at a total in the mid 140s looks too low. Playing against teams with a winning record has seen five of the last six Seattle games go OVER the total. Connecticut is scoring big, and Seattle is giving up a lot, as is the Connecticut defense, which has allowed 82 ppg in the last seven. This one goes OVER the total.

Last year the Detroit Shock was cutting down the nets as WNBA Champion. This season is a far cry from what we saw from that team a year ago. The Atlanta Dream has played their way from the worst team in the league to a respectable 11-11, and they have a 7-4 mark at home, and 4-1 in their last five with the lone loss by just two points. They are still under the oddsmaker’s radar, with the memory of last year's team still in mind. The Dream have taken the money in 10 of their last 12, and have dropped just one game all season as a favorite of 4.5 or less. The Shock went 3-0 last season vs. the Dream, winning by an average of 14 ppg. This season the Dream is 2-0 winning by 10 at home. The Shock is failing badly in the East as reputation has exceeded ability, and they lie at 3-11 ATS in the East. I'll go with the Dream in this one.

This Minnesota team likes to push the ball up and down the court. For the season, they have gotten a lot of games to push over the total as they enter here with a 16-6 mark to the OVER. There is an interesting sidelight to that however. They have played against the top defense in the league - the LA Sparks to one of those UNDERS. They also played the No. 3 defense in the league, Seattle, to an UNDER, and the number No. 4 defense in the league, New York, to an UNDER. Now enter the No. 2 team in the league, Indiana, and the total is set higher than any of the three games they played against the top defenses in the league, and they all went UNDER. This one is set too high, based on what we have seen. Against all teams with a winning record, the UNDER is 6-2 in Lynx games. I'm backing this one to go UNDER the posted total.

This Phoenix team that was favored by 6.5 at home to a Sacramento team that has proven to be the worst in the league, and now they are instilled as a six-point favorite against a much more competitive San Antonio team certainly raises some eyebrows. It looks to me like Phoenix has the oddsmaker’s attention, but is their best basketball of the season behind them? They won six of their first nine home games by 10+ points and two others by seven and nine points. The last four have been troublesome, as they dropped the last two. Three games back, they needed OT to come away with the win, and now they are being respected like the team that was playing on a different level early on, but not so right now. San Antonio isn't the same as they were a year ago, but they have played much better, winning their last two on the road, and dropping the two before that, both in OT. This spread is too high, and I like San Antonio to at least squeeze within the number here.
