I can't tell you how many times I've heard people over the years say things to me like, "Looks like you're winning big. You should probably quit before you give it back." Frankly, they just don't understand how poker works. They're often the same people who suffer huge losses at the table, but only manage very small wins. You should never be preoccupied with your winning percentage. Basically, it's a meaningless statistic. People brag to me that they've won 22 days in a row and that they've come out on...
Once again, I made a final table at the 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP). This time, the game was Omaha 8/b (a high/low split game). With a chance to win my historic 10th bracelet and tie Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan with 10 apiece for the WSOP all-time lead, I fell short once again. Although I was able to beat 360 players, there were five that I could not outlast. I did manage to set the record for most finishes in the money in WSOP history at 53, but this wasn't the record that I wanted...
Since the early 1970s, the winner of the $10,000 buy-in No Limit Texas Hold'em main event at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) has been crowned the World Champion of Poker. Back in the '70s, there were less than 50 players entered in the tournament. This year, about 8,000 players will pony up the $10,000 entry fee. As the number of players in the WSOP main event has increased so rapidly, the event has become somewhat of a lottery. With so many competitors, luck plays a much bigger role and explains...
Washington (July 20, 2006) - In response to a bill that would ban Internet poker, the nonprofit Poker Players Alliance has released a study making a case for the online games to be legalized and taxed by the federal government. Last week, the House passed the "Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act," which would update the Interstate Wire Act of 1961. That act has been made somewhat nebulous thanks to modern technology, outlawing betting on sports across state lines over the telephone...
As the first winner of the World Series of Poker 36 years ago, poker legend Johnny Moss won a silver cup. Back then, a vote among the players decided the winner. No cash exchanged hands.
"When the tournament was over, we gave the cup to Moss and then had a few drinks and started playing poker again," poker legend Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson said. "Those were the days. Boy, have times changed."
Have they ever. No longer shunned to the dark, back rooms of casinos, poker is sizzling in the mainstream...
