Nhl Hockey Predictions - October 25, 2008

Today we roll with a stacked card of six NHL permium picks...

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: New Jersey at Philadelphia (4:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Philadelphia -103 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.9)
Pick: 2 units on Game Total OVER 5.5 +114 (risk 2 to win 2.3)

The starting time for this game has been moved up three hours, because of the World Series taking place in Philly tonight. The Flyers have to be feeling good about themselves as they got their first win of the season last night against this same Devils’ team. It not only put them in the win column, but also broke a 12-game losing streak playing on the road in New Jersey. The Flyers attack is catching fire, as they have netted 16 goals in their last three games. As if the loss was not enough, the Devils lost the services of Jamie Langenbrunner last night as well due to injury. The Devils broke out fast with three quick first period goals, but all 23 shots that followed were denied. I like Philadelphia to carry the momentum home and win this one tonight. I mentioned the Flyers’ offense on fire, and the fact that in their seven games to date, their games have tallied 58 goals, or 8.29 goals per contest, so I will ride the OVER here as well.

Game: Atlanta at Boston (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Boston -191 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.1)
Both of these teams are off to mediocre starts. Since breezing through their opener 7-4, Atlanta has not seen the win column yet, except for a shootout win at home over Buffalo. The problem for Atlanta has been scoring. After finding the net seven times in the opener, the Thrashers have recorded just 12 goals in their last six, good for just two goals a game, and not good for winning hockey games, specially when your giving up three per game. The Bruins have had trouble finding the win column themselves, but against the punchless Thrashers at home, they should break into the win column. The Bruins have played five on the road and are finding the net just shy of three goals a game, which should be enough to get the win on home ice.

Game: Ottawa at Toronto (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Toronto -102 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 2)
The Ottawa Senators have really been slumping as they have now dropped three straight - all at home. They are off a five game home stand where they found the win column just once and haven't been on the road since October 5. Martin Gerber has been shaky behind the net, as he allowed 13 goals in four games on the home stand, or over three a game. The Senators tried Alexander Auld to stop the bleeding their last time on the ice, and it got worse as Auld allowed four. They must now face a Maple Leafs team coming home, feeling good off a four-goal performance and road win in Boston. Until the Senators show some signs of stepping up defensively and start getting some hot goaltending, they are a play-against team, so I'm backing the Leafs at home.

Game: Washington at Dallas (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Washington +112 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 2.2)
Stars returned home from a three-game trip to the East Coast and could be in a lull tonight readjusting from the trip and time change. Washington has been very competitive, getting good goaltending, but has come up just short losing by a single goal in their last two and via shootout three games back. These teams have not met since '06 - a Washington win. The Caps are 11-4 after allowing two goals or less and also 8-3 in their last 11 against the Western Conference. The Stars are just 2-5 in their last seven off of one day of rest, and returning from a trip back East, and are probably down a bit physically, so I'll back the Caps here.

Game: Edmonton at Vancouver (10:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Vancouver -126 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.6)
There's no place like home for the Canucks as they opened at home with a win, but have been on the road since. Their lone home game was an impressive one, where they won handily 6-0. After opening 4-0 Edmonton has found life difficult on the road as they have dropped the first two of their three-game trip. The Canucks have been a good investment off a long road trip of seven days or more, where they are 5-2 on home ice following a lengthy trip. The Oilers have been a money-burning 7-22 on the road against a team that has a .600 or higher home winning percentage. The Canucks get the call here.

Results: 5-1
