Nhl Game Predictions - November 25, 2009

We are 20-3 so far this NHL season with our 5-unit picks and go with another tonight. Overall, we are hitting 60% on the ice at 73-48 for +48 units over the last month. Today we've got a stacked NHL card of seven picks.

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Buffalo at Washington (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Washington -130 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.3)

The Washington Capitals are tough as nails at home. You have to go all the way back to last March to find them losing at home by more than a single goal, so you know they will always be in the game. It was December of last season when they suffered their first outright loss at home. The Sabres really had it going, but have hit their first rough spot of the season as they are winless in their last three games and have been getting buried, with a combined score of 13-6 against them in the three games. Washington is not a good place to get healthy. The Caps are 63-31 in their last 94 as a favorite while the Sabres have cashed just two of their last nine as a dog of +110 to +150. I'll go with Washington here.

The Penguins don't usually give up much on home ice as 19 of their last 28 home games, going back to last season, has seen the opponent score two times or less, that is 68% of the time. That puts pressure on the Penguins’ offense to score big to push this one over, which won't be easy vs. a Montreal team that has allowed just seven goals in their last four road games, less than two per contest. The Canadiens are playing UNDER against an opponent that allowed two or less goals in their last game at a 10-1 clip in their last 11. At home the stingy Penguins have played UNDER at a 8-3-1 clip in their last 12. I like this one to stay UNDER the total.

The Detroit Red Wings were credited with a home loss in a game against St. Louis early on, leaving them with just one home loss on the season and just nine a year ago. The bottom line is that you had better bring your "A" game if you want to win here, and even that may not be enough. They play tight and have allowed just 21 goals in their 10 games in Detroit on the season. Atlanta has played tough on the road this season, but like most other teams, they have yet to solve the Red Wings, winning just 2 of the last 11 meetings, and one of the last six in Detroit. The Red Wings’ ability to shutdown opposing offenses has led to them going 18-7-1 in their last 26 as a home favorite to the UNDER as well as 41-15 in their last 56 as a home favorite. This one goes to Detroit, and I like the UNDER here as well.

The Blues with nine of their last 11 at home, you'd think that they would make strides, but that certainly hasn't been the case as they came away with just two wins and an OT win. That may not be so bad as on the season the Blues have been a much better team on the road where they are 3-1-3. The Blues are defending better on the road, but the scoring has been a problem, leading to tight, low-scoring games as since they came back from Sweden, they have played 4-1-1 to the UNDER on the road. The Dallas offense isn't much to brag about of late either, with seven of their last 10 games resulting in them scoring two goals or less. The Stars are not shinning when favored from -110 to -150, where they are a dreadful 1-7 in their last eight. They have opened it up however, when facing a team that has a winning percentage of less than .400 as they have played 17-8-2 to the OVER, and eight of the last 11 between these two have gone OVER as well as four of the last five in Dallas. I like the Blues here and the OVER.

The Edmonton Oilers have really struggled on the road, but have certainly been getting it done at home where they stand at 8-4-1. The Kings have struggled a bit on home ice, but seem to be more focused on the road where they are an impressive 8-5-1 on the season. That focused effort has seen 17 of their last 25 playing to the UNDER where they have played close, tight games and are finding a way to win. They have really tightened things up after a big blowout loss of three goals or more, playing 9 of 11 UNDER. Last year these teams met four times and in three of the four, no team scored more than two goals in regulation as they seem to play tough, tight-checking, playoff-type games, and the UNDER trends seem to back that up. I'll play this one to finish UNDER the total.
