Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Florida at Detroit (7:00 PM Eastern)

The Red Wings are coming off their first true home loss of the season - a 3-1 setback to Dallas. The low-scoring game is becoming the norm in Detroit as they have played four of their last five here UNDER the total. That makes 12 of their last 15 as a favorite on home ice that has gone UNDER the total, and 15-5-1 UNDER in their last 21 vs. the East. The Panthers are putting up some impressive UNDER numbers themselves as they have played to the UNDER in 15 of their last 21 vs. the West, and 23-8-2 to the UNDER against the Central division. This series has been a classic UNDER for a longtime as the UNDER has taken the money to a mark of 8-1-1 in the last 10 played. I'll follow all the trends and back the UNDER in this one.

The Washington Capitals have been playing a tough brand of hockey on home ice as they were 29-9-1 a year ago and enter this game at 7-1-3. They will be facing a rather inept Canadiens team that has had trouble finding the net. The Canadiens have registered just 12 goals in their last seven on the road, which is 1.7 per contest. To their credit, although it is not visible in the win column, this team has not allowed anyone to score more than three goals in any of their last six games, so this total appears to be set too high. The Canadiens have played eight of their last nine to the UNDER against an opponent that allowed two goals or less in their last game, while the Caps have been doing the UNDER thing to a 17-7-1 mark in their last 25 vs. the Northeast. I'll play this one to go UNDER the total.

The Avalanche got off to a big start but has struggled some lately. The Canuck's have an impressive 7-2 mark at home and will be glad to get back on home ice after dropping three of their last four on a five-game road trip. The Canucks’ success on home ice is simple - they have allowed a total of 12 goals in their last eight played here. When you consider the that Red Wings put up five of them, that means just seven allowed in the other seven games, or one per contest. The Avalanche went for three goals or more in seven of eight road games, which propelled them to a lofty road mark, but most recently they have not been the same offensively on the road as they have scored just 10 in their last five, or two per contest. This will be the third game in four nights for the Avalanche, and the previous six in this situation have all gone UNDER the total. The Canucks are 6-1 to the UNDER in their last seven vs. a winning team, and five of the last six in this series have also gone UNDER. I'll go UNDER here.
