Nhl Hockey Predictions - November 15, 2009

After a nice long great run, we hit the brakes yesterday going o-fer. Three of our picks were on the UNDER and those were doomed in a day that the goalies decided to take off. The average score in yesterday's games was 6.4 goals per game! Anyway,  we'll move beyond that hiccup and roll with three picks today including a 5-unit...

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Minnesota at Carolina (1:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Carolina -110 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

Carolina is 2-16 and yet I am backing them. It helps when you get to face a team that is 2-10 on the road and scoring 2.0 goals per game. Minnesota has been decent at home but horrible away and I like Carolina to win this very winnable game. This is Minnesota's fourth straight road game and their third game in the past three days. They are just 16-35 the past three seasons on the road vs. teams that allow 2.9+ goals per game. I like Carolina to break out of the funk here.

Atlanta has put together a couple of really good games in which they have outscored opponents 12-3. But two games does not a team make. Prior to those two games, the Thrashers had beaten a team by 2+ goals just once in their prior nine games. They were actually outscored in those nine games 3.6 to 2.8 on average. Now they are expected to win big here but I don't see it happening. Since last season, the Thrashers are just 5-17 at home vs. the puck line vs. teams that average 5+ assists per game. I like Edmonton on the puckline here.

Ilya Kovalchuck is back and the Thrashers are playing better. But, he's still not 100% and I think this line is an overreaction to his return. This team still owns a losing home record and a spotty defense. Edmonton has had trouble scoring of late but that could change today against this Thrasher's defense. The Oilers are 45-30 over the past decade when coming off back-to-back road losses. I think Edmonton finds a way to break the losing streak here.
