Today's NHL Hockey Picks:
Game: Pittsburgh at Detroit (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Detroit -1.5 goals +190 (puckline) (risk 2 to win 3.8)
This is a team that is 17-3 in their last 20 playoff games on home ice. They have been 10-10 if playing them on the -1.5 puckline. Here we have a 50% rate of winning, but the odds we are getting in return are nearly 2-1, so there is certainly value here! The Red Wings have lost nine games in each of the last two seasons at home, and they have certainly showed they turn it up a notch when the playoffs start. I will take the value offered here and play them on the puckline.
Game: Pittsburgh at Detroit (8:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Detroit -150 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2)
The Detroit Red Wings will once again face the Pittsburgh penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Red Wings came out last year and made a huge statement at home by dominating the first two games in Detroit. They didn't allow the Penguins to score even one goal. The Red Wings overwhelmed the Penguins, winning the first two games by a combined 7-0 score, and out shot the Penguins 70-41 in the two games. Chris Osgood had the two shutouts, and he is at it again in the '09 playoffs as he has allowed just 16 goals in nine home games, or an average of just 1.78 goals against a game. Last year, he allowed 16 in 11 games to bring his two-year playoff total to 32 goals against in 20 games, or 1.6 per game. When you consider that the Red Wings are scoring more goals at home this season than they did last year in the playoffs, it is hard not to like them here. The Penguins steamrolled the Hurricanes in a four-game sweep to get here, but Detroit isn't going to be so easy. If you look at the first two played here last year, it might be an indicator of what to expect for this one. Throw in their last meeting of the regular season this year, a 3-0 Red Wings’ shutout at Pittsburgh this one doesn't bode well for the Penguins. The Red Wings are now 17-3 at home in their last 20 playoff games and 52-19-1 at home against an opponent with a winning road record. I'm riding the Red Wings in game one.
