Hockey Pick - May 24, 2008
The Stanley Cup Finals are here featuring the old guard vs. the new guard as the upstart and young Pittsburgh Penguins behind Sid the Kid and Malkin take on the Presidents' Trophy winning Red Wings who have made five Stanley Cup Finals appearances in the past 13 years. Can the young guns knock off the old guard?
Of course we'll have game-by-game opinions. So far in the playoffs we are 40-24 (63%) for +32 units. We have two picks in Saturday night's opener...

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:
Game: Pittsburgh at Detroit (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Detroit -170 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 1.8)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 5.5 -120 (risk 3 to win 2.5)
The Penguins have been great in the playoffs, posting a 12-2 mark, defeating opponents by an average score of 3.6 to 1.9. Sidney Crosby leads all playoff players with 21 points. Their inexperience hasn't hurt them thus far but we think things are about to change. This is Detroit, after all. Detroit has gone 12-4 in the playoffs winning by a similar average margin of 3.4 to 1.9. Slight overall edge to Pittsburgh, right? Well, this game is being played in Detroit. At home during the playoffs the Red Wings have given up just 1.5 goals per game while scoring 3.1. This team is virtually unbeatable at home. They are in fact 21-5 the past three seasons at home vs. very good teams (those outscoring their opponents by 0.5+ goals per game). Over the past two seasons they are 30-9 at home vs. teams that can score (those averaging 2.9+ goals per game). Pittsburgh may have a shot at winning this series. As the games where on, their youth may be a benefit. But, in game one vs. a rested Detroit club, and with nerves having the biggest impact early for a young team on the big stage, we really like Detroit to take care of business. We also like the UNDER. As we stated, Detroit has allowed just 1.5 goals per game at home while Pittsburgh's defense has allowed 1.9 per game in the playoffs. The Penguins are 26-19 UNDER on the road this year including 19-11 UNDER to a total of 5.5. Detroit, when well rested, also tends to play to the UNDER as they are a perfect 7-0 UNDER the past two seasons at home when playing three or less games over a ten day span. Detroit and the UNDER here.

Pittsburgh fell victim to the "young great team" syndrome in game four as they slept-walked through the early going and found themselves down before they woke up. They couldn't come back...

Dallas came out hard in their must-win game four at home and staved off elimination by defeating the Red Wings 3-1. It was Detroit's third loss in 14 playoff games and while a bit surprising, we a...

We've been all over Detroit in this series, banking with them on both the moneyline and puckline. We are going to stick strictly with a moneyline pick here as we expect Dallas to play their best g...

We have been on Pittsburgh a lot this postseason and they have rewarded us and their backers with a 10-1 record. This is the time we get off that train and go strong the other way. If there were a gam...

Detroit took care of business, as predicted, in games one and two. Now the linesmakers and-or the public seem to think that Dallas has about an equal shot at winning here at home. We disagree. Detroit...
