Free Hockey Picks - March 25, 2010

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Chicago at Columbus (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Chicago -150 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 2.7)

The Chicago Blackhawks have 99 points in what has become a Stanley Cup caliber season. They have recorded two shutouts in their last three games and play tough every night on the ice. This is a bad Columbus team, and they have proven one thing and that is when they start to lose, they lose in bunches. This season they have lost two straight games eight times since late October, and in each case it became a 3+ game losing streak. So when they start to lose, they don't easily find their way back. The Blackhawks are tough after allowing 2 goals or less in their last game at 21-7 in their last 28. The Blue Jackets are 31-71-1 the last 103 times they have faced a team over .600. I'll go with Chicago here.

The Flames had a disastrous January which included nine straight losses, but the before and after have been very good. They are 8-4 since the swoon, and playing very good hockey. The Islanders simply aren't that good and like any poor team, they have had their moments, but when they are not in one, the quality of hockey simply isn't there. They are currently in their seventh winless streak of three games or more on the season, and have been shutout the last two games. This team has been shutout six times this season, and the news is not good in what follows as they have lost every single one after being shutout. Calgary is playing much better, and the Islanders have not responded well in this situation all year. Calgary gets the call.

The Capitals 14-game streak without a loss has left this team on cruise control, and that is when a good team becomes over-valued. They have been just 8-6 since, and for them that says cruise control because they are better than that. The Hurricanes has been a thorn for the Caps all season as Carolina has actually outscored them in the five games 18-17, coming away with two wins, and two OT losses in the five games. Carolina will use the confidence gained from beating the Caps in their last game, and they have also been the NHL's best as a home dog where they are 7-0 in their last seven. I'll go with Carolina in this one.

The Florida Panthers have become a sub-.500 club and in their last 10 on the road, they have come out on the right side just three times. The Canadiens have been on the opposite side of those numbers at home, where they have been on the right side of seven of their last 10. The Panthers have offered little resistance as an underdog where they are a dismal 17-36 in their last 53 posted as a dog. The Habs have been winning the games that they are supposed to as they are 6-1 in their last seven as a favorite. The Panthers have had their trouble with Montreal as they have only managed two wins in the last nine meetings. I'll go with Montreal here.

When you look at the history here and see that Florida has two wins in the last nine meetings it calls potential to the puckline. When you take a look at the Panthers last nine losses, seeing that seven of them have come by 2 goals or more, the value increases. Add in the majority of the last nine wins by Montreal have been by 2+ goals and value has been served! I'll go with Montreal on the puckline.
