Today's NHL Hockey Picks:
Game: New York Rangers at Philadelphia (12:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on New York Rangers +135 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 5.4)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 5.5 -120 (risk 3 to win 2.5)
The Flyers have had one solid stretch the entire season, and it isn't happening now. They went 13-4 over a 17-game stretch, but have surrounded that with a 19-23 mark. The Rangers have emerged from the ashes of a 2-12 stretch and have been playing top-level hockey in their last five games as they have claimed victory in four of them. They have also played a lot of low-scoring games that have seen the UNDER as the winner in 26 of their last 41. This will be the Rangers fourth game in six days, a situation that has seen the UNDER claiming the money at a rate of 20-7-2. The Flyers playing low vs. road teams that are with a losing record as they have gone under in 20 of 28. The Flyers aren’t playing great, while the Rangers are on a nice run. I like the Rangers here as well as the UNDER.
Game: Carolina at Washington (7:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Carolina +150 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 4.5)Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 6 -120 (risk 3 to win 2.5)
The Hurricanes have made a nice 15-9 run as we head down the stretch of the NHL season. The difference has been finally going to and sticking with Cam Ward behind the net. He has recorded four shutouts during this stretch. The Caps had the invincibility factor working at home, as they opened the season on home ice at 18-2. What has happened since? They are just 7-9 in their last 16 played at home - a dramatic turnaround. Lately, they have also struggled to find the net as they have recorded just 12 goals in their last six games, or just two per game. The Hurricanes have been feasting on the Southeast division all season at 10-3 in their last 13. This is also their third game in four days and they have played 11 of those previous 13 to the UNDER. The Caps struggling and the Hurricanes finishing strong says go with Carolina here and the UNDER as well.
Game: Minnesota at Dallas (8:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Game Total OVER 5 -130 (risk 4 to win 3.1)
The Wild has had trouble keeping the puck out of the net on the defensive end of late as they have now allowed 27 goals in their last eight games, or 3.4 per game. The Stars have faced a similar problem as they have allowed 26 over their last eight, or 3.25 a game. That adds up to almost seven goals allowed between these teams per game over the last few weeks. The total sits at the lowest point you usually see in an NHL regular season at five, so I see a lot of wiggle room in this one towards the OVER. When you toss in the fact that the last seven meetings between these two teams in Dallas have played accordingly, six of the seven going over, there is only one way to go here and that's OVER the total.
Game: Los Angeles at San Jose (10:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 1 unit on Los Angeles +260 (moneyline) (risk 1 to win 2.6)Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 5.5 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The LA Kings have been disappointing this season, but like many poor teams, they all have their moments during the course of a long season. The Kings are enjoying one of those now, as they have won three of their last four games, and have actually played +.500 hockey over their last 23. What looked like an epic and historic season for the Sharks has turned sour. The Sharks have suddenly lost 12 of their last 18 games - more losses than they had the entire season before this ugly run. That means over the last 23 games, the Kings have actually been the better hockey team in this game and they are getting huge odds, so there is tons of value here. I will take the Kings in this one. I will also play the UNDER as San Jose is now 14-3-2 to the UNDER against the Pacific, and eight of the last 11 meetings between these two teams have also gone UNDER.
Game: Colorado at Edmonton (10:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Colorado +140 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 5.6)
The road wins for the Avalanche have been hard to come by, but they are playing better of late, and won easily in their last road game in Chicago by a 5-1 count. Edmonton has done a horrible job protecting home ice of late as they have gone just 4-6 in their last 10. The Avalanche has something going for them here and that has been the best spot for them all season. They will be playing their fourth game in six nights. The last six times they have been in this situation have resulted in six wins! The Oilers have not worn the big favorite label well at all. They are a dreadful 6-13 in their last 19 as a favorite of -151 to -200. There is lots of value on the dog here, so Colorado gets the call.
Game: Nashville at Phoenix (10:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Nashville -135 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 3)
The Predators have done a better job of late as winners of six in their last nine, and it has left them 5-5 in their last 10 on the road - an improvement from earlier in the season. The Coyotes have apparently quit as they have really tanked as we get deep into the season. The Coyotes have just four wins to show for their last 20 games, and that includes just one at home in their last eight. Their offensive attack has been completely missing, as they have now gone eight straight games without scoring more than two goals, so it is easy to see why seven of them have resulted in losses. You can't take a team that has packed it in for the year. Nashville gets the call.
Results: 3-5
