Hockey Free Picks - March 14, 2008

We hit last night for +3.3 units. Tonight we have three plays...

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Atlanta at Washington (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 5.5 -115 (risk 3 to win 2.6)

Atlanta averages 2.4 goals per game on the road this seaosn but in 23 division games, they have averaged 3.1 and over their last five they have averaged 3.2. They have allowed 3.5 per game on the season on the road and 4.0 over their last five. Wow - they could reach this total by themselves. Throw in Washington who is averaging 6.0 goals per game at home this season and 3.8 goals scored per game over their last five and we have the potential for a ton of scoring here. The last three seasons Washington is 20-6 OVER in the second of back-to-back home games if they are coming off a win. Over the past two seasons they are 12-4 OVER in the second of back to back home games regardless of the outcome of the first game. OVER here.

Game: St. Louis at San Jose (10:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on St. Louis +205 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 6.2)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 5 -125 (risk 3 to win 2.4)

San Jose loves the road, but can't like playing at home. At 25-11 on the road, they are the best in the NHL. But at home they are 16-18! That's is very strange but we'll take advantage of that as they host the lowly Blues. The Sharks home woes must be due to playing good teams, right? They must still do OK vs. losing teams, right? Wrong! They are 8-10 this season at home vs. losing teams. A sub-.500 team laying 2-to-1 odds can't be a good bet. Teams off two straight road wins are at best a 50-50 proposition in their next game in the NHL. The Sharks are 1-8 this season at home off a road win. We'll take the big odds on St. Louis. We also like the OVER. St. Louis is 18-9 OVER this season after having lost 4+ of their last six games. They are also 7-1 OVER on the road after allowing 3+ goals in two straight games. St. Louis and the OVER here.
