Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Boston at New York Rangers (12:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Boston -115 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.7)

Boston is just as good on the road as they are at home. On the road they have compiled a 21-12 record, thanks to holding opponents to just 2.1 goals per game. The Rangers play pretty good defense too, but not good enough. They have won two straight games but those wins came against lowly Colorado and the Islanders. Prior to those two cupcake wins, the Rangers lost seven of eight with the only win coming as a -215 favorite. The Bruins are 15-3 this season on the road vs. teams that allow 30+ shots on goal per game. Meanwhile, the Rangers are just 8-24 vs. teams that average 2.9+ goals per game. I like Boston to get it done here.

Prior to a two-goal game with Montreal on Friday (a game in which we won the UNDER), the Thrashers had been going OVER to the tune of seven of their prior eight games. I'm again bucking that trend and going UNDER here. With two apparently good offenses and bad defenses, this line is inflated to the point where we get value on the UNDER. Atlanta's offense has been average all season, but their defense terrible. Calgary is great offensive team at home, but on the road they are simply average. They have gone UNDER the total 32-15 in their last 47 road games with a total of six or more. The Thrashers' defense has improved of late and they are 8-1 UNDER the past couple of seasons when playing in their third straight home game. I like the UNDER here.

We faded Washington in a big way in their last home game on Thursday. They were -295 favorites in that one and lost, making us a bundle. Today though I'm on them. They've lost three straight and that loss to Toronto had to be a major wake-up call. On top of that, Ovechkin is expected back for this game. The Caps are 24-8 this season against teams that average 2.9+ goals per game. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is just 5-12 after a win by 2+ goals this season. I like the Caps to bounce back here. I also like the UNDER. I expect an inspired defensive effort from Washington given the embarrassing loss last game. And, the Penguins are actually playing great defense right now themselves (1.4 goals per game allowed over their last five). Take Washington and the UNDER here.
