Nhl Picks - January 26, 2010

We nailed another totals play last night as Buffalo and Vancouver finished UNDER. Today we hit the ice with five premium picks including dual 5-unit plays. On the season, our 5-unit NHL picks are hitting 71% at 59-24. Overall, our NHL plays are 232-149 (61%) for +181 units over the last three months.

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Anaheim at Atlanta (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on Game Total UNDER 6 +100 (risk 5 to win 5)

The Ducks have been squandering opportunities on the road, and an anemic offensive output is the culprit. The Ducks have managed just 19 goals in their last 10 road games, or less than 2 per contest. That makes for a steep output from the Thrashers in this one to push across enough to top a high total. That may be tough to come by from a team also struggling at the offensive end, having scored 2 or less in nine of their last 14. The Ducks have posted 17 of 23 to the UNDER after a win, and that just points to the offensive consistency issues. I like this one to go UNDER the total.
Game: Phoenix at Detroit (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 5 -135 (risk 3 to win 2.2)
The Phoenix Coyotes are having all kinds of issues both behind the net and on the defensive end, which really manifested itself in a seven-goal onslaught by Buffalo a few games ago. That was just the icing on the cake from a team that has allowed 40 goals in their last 10 or four per game. The Red Wings have issues of their own, allowing three or more goals in each of their last five. After scoring 2 goals or less, Phoenix has gone onto play 11 straight without an UNDER in their next game! It is going to be tough to keep this one under 5 with a pair of struggling teams on the defensive end, so I'm playing this one to go OVER the total.
Game: Los Angeles at Toronto (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Toronto -110 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 1.8)
Pick: 5 units on Game Total UNDER 6 -120 (risk 5 to win 4.2)

The Maple Leafs will be glad to get home. Toronto doesn’t play well on the road, but has landed on the right side of seven of their last 12 here at home and four of their last five as a dog. The Kings have played well on the road this season, but have not fared well off a win on the same road trip as they have dropped four of sic. They are off a big emotional win against Detroit, and may be a bit flat coming into this one. The Maple Leafs have also played to a 6-0-1 mark in their last seven home games, while the Kings are 8-3 to the UNDER in their last 11 on the road vs. a team with a winning percentage of .400 or less. The last seven times these teams have met in Toronto the UNDER has prevailed in six of the seven. I like Toronto and the UNDER in this one.

Game: New Jersey at Ottawa (7:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Game Total OVER 5 -130 (risk 4 to win 3.1)
The Devils have been consistently good on the road, except for their last road trip, but are back in charge winning the opener on this three-game trip. The Senators have been a hot team winning their last six, scoring 3.3 goals per game in the process. This is a team that is 4-1-1 in their last six to the OVER off two days rest. And with a hot offense right now, they will be making a contribution on the offensive end to push this one OVER. The Devils have managed to push across 3 or more 56% of the time on the road this season, putting this low total in jeopardy. I will play this one to go OVER the total.

Results: 2-3
