Hockey Picks - January 16, 2008

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Florida at Philadelphia (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Florida +150 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 3)

Philadelphia allows 3.2 goals per game at home where they are just 8-10. Florida owns a better record on the road. The Flyers are just 18-39 the past two seasons vs. losing teams including 5-20 at home vs. teams at 40%-49% SU. This season they are 2-10 vs. poor offensive teams (under 2.6 goals per game) and just 6-10 as a home favorite of -200 or less.

The Islanders have owned the Devils, winning all four games this season. These are great odds that it will happen again. Rick DiPietro has won all three of his starts against New Jersey this season, posting a 1.30 GAA. One of the reasons why the Islanders may have so much success vs. the Devils is that New Jersey has a fairly week offense. New York is 8-2 this season vs. teams that score under 2.6 goals per game. The problem for New Jersey's offense is exacerbated when facing a great power play killing team like New York (NY averages just 12.4% power plays scored against). The Devils are 0-7 this season when facing a team that allows less than 13% power play conversion. New York here.

St. Louis is 12-8 UNDER on the road but just 8-7 UNDER at home. Over their last five games they are 4-1 to the OVER, scoring 3.6 goals per game. Chicago is an OVER team all around, including 10-5 OVER vs. division foes. The Blues are 8-1 OVER this season when playin gwith 2+ days of rest. We'll take this one to go OVER 5 goals.

Calgary is one of hte few teams that plays better on the road than at home. This season they are scoring 3.1 goals per game and have a 12-10 record away from home. Minnesota's strength is defense but they haven't been playing very good defense of late. The Wild are just 15-23 the3 past three seasons off a home win by 2+ goals including 5-12 if the win was by 3+ goals. They are also 3-10 after scoring 3+ goals in three straight games over the past two seasons. Looks like a potential letdown spot for Minnesota and we'll back the Flames.
