Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Philadelphia at Washington (1:00 PM Eastern)

Alex Ovechkin's great play has landed him the biggest contract in NHL history (13 years, $124 million). He is tied for second in scoring and he's helpd the Capitals win four of their last five games. They scored 5+ goals in three of htose games. Philadelphia is a good teams but they tend to play down to their competition. They are just 17-39 vs. losing teams the past two seasons. In contrast, Washington is 10-6 vs. winning teams this season. Washington beat this Flyers team 4-3 back in November and Philadelphia is just 20-55 revenging a loss the past two seasons including 13-43 if the loss was same-season. We like Washington's chances here for a 2+ goal win. Philly is 13-9 UNDER on the road and when facing a losing team on the road the past three seasons, they have gone UNDER 30 out of 46 times. We like this to go UNDER as well.

St. Louis has owned the Canucks of late. The Blues are 6-3 vs. Vancouver over the past three seasons including 4-1 here at home. Vancouver will have trouble keeping up with St. Louis on offense today. And, while both teams have very good defenses, at home St. Louis' is significantly better than Vancouver's on the road. This is Vancouver's third game in four days and that spells trouble as the Canucks are 4-15 the past two seasons in that situation.

Phoenix's offense is clicking right now as they have averaged 3.2 goals per game and gone OVER 3-1 the past five games. They've averaged 31.4 shots on goal per game over that span and been efficient on the power play. Minnesota has also been on a scoring spree, averaging 3.8 per game over their last five, while allowing 3.4 per game. We look for the scoring to continue and for this game to go OVER.

these teams have historically played low-scoring games but we expect that to change here. Calgary is averaging 3.4 goals per game on the road while allowing 3.2. Over their last five games, those numbers are even higher at 3.6 and 3.4, respectively. Edmonton is scoring 3.4 per game over their last five games too. Their defense has been solid but we like Calgary's chances at scoring here. The Flames are 102-63 OVER to a total of 5 on the road over the past decade. They are 12-1 OVER following a non-conference game over the past two seasons and 9-0 OVER revenging a home loss this season.
