1-2 last night as we just missed the big 2.2 to 1 payout on Montreal. They led by 2 for most of the way but ended up winning by just one. Tonight we have five picks.

Remember, when betting big underdogs, we will lose more than we win, but will still come out ahead. An underdog at +200 need only win one third of the time to break-even. Hitting that at 40% makes us money. If you, for psychological reasons, need to win more than you lose (percentage-wise), don't bet underdogs! If you do bet them, keep in mind that they will lose more than they win. But when they hit, we it will be worth 2-3 times what a win on a favorite is worth.

Game: Florida at Washington (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Washington -113 (risk 2 to win 1.8)

Washington wants to win this game. They have lost five of six to the Panthers here at home over the past three seasons. Florida beat them big earlier this month and big twice last month. This one has meaning for Washington. Florida is just 7-25 on the season away from home. In division contests they are allowing 3.7 goals per game. Washington is no great team but they are at least 14-18 at home and scoring 3.2 per game and 3.3 vs. division foes. Florida comes off a rare road blowout win as they beat Boston 7-2. But, they are just 1-13 in their last fourteen coming off a road win by 4+ goals. Take the motivated home team.

Four of the last six in this matchup have gone UNDER including two of the last three played here in Carolina. In the two prior games this season, 5 goals were scored in each. Ottawa is 16-12 UNDER on the road this season while Carolina has gone UNDER in five of their last six games. Carolina has held five of their last nine opponents to 2 goals or less and tonight we look for the home team to dictate the tempo and for this one to go UNDER. Ottawa is 11-2 UNDER following two tough divisional games this season. Carolina is 12-1 UNDER when playing with 2+ days of rest as they are here.

New Jersey is on quite a roll, thanks to their defense. Despite scoring 2.4 goals per game over their last five games, they have gone 4-1, holding four of those opponents to under 3 goals each. But Pittsburgh can score. They have scored 5+ goals in five of their last eight games. They average 3.5 per game on the season and 3.9 vs. division opponents! So this is a matchup of strength on strength and in those, we side towards the home team. Pittsburgh is 15-8 this season versus division opponents and 17-7 in the second half of the season.

Can Chicago win this game? Maybe. But we'll instead back them on the puck line taking +1.5 goals. In what should be a very low scoring game, getting +1.5 at only -165 is a gift. Yes, Detroit has dominated the Blackhawks, winning nearly every game they have played the past few seasons. But in December of this year, Chicago lost by one goal here at home. Detroit is an average team on the road this year. While they have won 22 of 29 at home, they are just a .500 team on the road. They score nearly a goal per game less and give up nearly a goal per game more away from home. Chicago plays decent defense at home and despite losing four of their last five games, they allowed more than 2 goals just once. In February, they have held eight of their twelve opponents to just 2 goals or less! With Detroit averaging just 2.6 per game on the road this season, it's very possible for Chicago to hold Detroit to 2 goals here and Chicago should be able to get on the board.

Philadelphia has lost the last two to the Islanders but prior to that they won eight of the last eleven. They have won five of the last seven played here in New York. Yes, this is a bit of stretch but we think they have a shot to win here. Their lone strength is power play defense and New York's PP offense is poor. So, no easy goals here for New York. Philadelphia, over the past two seasons, has a winning record on the road vs. good offensive teams (30+ shots on goal per game). New York has a losing record at home vs. losing teams over the past decade. They are also just 3-11 this season after allowing 2 goals or less for two straight games.

There are times to back big underdogs and this is not one of them. Columbus is 10-20 on the road, scoring just 2.2 goals per game and allowing 3.1. Their defense has gotten worse of late as they have allowed 4+ goals in seven games this month. Coorado can take advantage of that as they are averaging 3.3 per game on the season and 3.8 per game over their last five. Colorado's weakness is defense but Columbus has very little offense to speak of. Colorado has motivation. They are off a road loss and they are 12-4 this season following a road loss including 7-1 when they lost by 2+ goals. They are also playing with revenge here.
