Nhl Pick - February 14, 2010

We took down another winning night as we finished 3-2. Our NHL plays are now 253-175 for +160 units over the last three and a half months. Today we hit the ice with a four-spot including a 5-unit pick.

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Nashville at Pittsburgh (1:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Nashville +160 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 4.8)

I think Nashville shows up here. They have been playing poorly of late and last game they gave up 5 goals in a loss. It was the most goals allowed in their last 21 games and I think they will play inspired defense here as a result. After last game, defenseman Shea Weber said, "We need to tighten up and win the last game before the break." He added that the Western Conference is tight and they can't afford to keep slumping. Pittsburgh can score, but the Predators are 17-11 vs. good offensive teams this season (those averaging 2.9+ goals per game). I like the Predators to surprise here.

Nashville is a winning road team, so getting 1.5 goals in an important game for them represents a lot of value. Nashville is not happy with their recent play and they are coming off an embarrassing defensive performance. They want to go into the break on a winning note, so expect no lay-down here. Pittsburgh has an explosive offense, but their defense is susceptible. They have allowed 3.6 goals per game over their last five. I like Nashville quite a bit here with the +1.5 cushion.

Nine Anaheim Ducks are gearing up for the Olympics. Their heads may not be fully into this game. The Ducks have been great at home and currently own a franchise-best streak of 11 straight home wins. Unfortunately for them, that's one more victory than they have on the road all season! They have lost 11 of their last 16 on the road and overall they are outscored on average by one full goal per game away from home. Edmonton certainly has their problems, but that may also lend to a lax performance by the Ducks today. I like Edmonton to win.

The Ducks are a bad road team, plain and simple.  They have only won 10 of 32 road games, yet they are favored here. Asking this team to win by 2+ on the road is a tall order. You'd think that Anaheim would be able to take advantage of a terrible Oilers defense here, but the Ducks are just 4-11 this season vs. teams that allow 3+ goals per game. I like Edmonton to at least keep this game close.
