Hockey Predictions - February 10, 2010

On the season our 5-unit NHL, NBA and CBB plays are 68% (98-47) with another winner on board tonight.

We hit a rough patch on the NHL ice yesterday going 0-2.  We look to regain our stride tonight and add to our three and a half month record of 244-165 (60%) for +161.8 units with seven premium picks including that 5 unit selection.

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: San Jose at Columbus (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Columbus +1.5 goals -230 (puckline) (risk 4 to win 1.7)
Pick: 4 units on Game Total UNDER 5.5 -120 (risk 4 to win 3.3)

The Columbus Blue Jackets went through a stretch this season where they came out on the right side of just three of 22 games. They have righted the ship, but are still getting odds thrown their way like a 3-19 team which they clearly have not been of late. They have come out on the right side of nine of their last 16 and five of their last six have played to the under, playing tight games. Just seven of their last 22 have been lost by two goals or more. The winning continues for the Sharks who seems to be headed to the Stanley Cup Finals. Blue Jackets, however, playing well and low at home with the last 60 here showing 40-19-1 to the under. They have had better than 75% of their games avoiding a loss by two goals or more, and this line shows a lot of value on the puckline, especially with the under tendencies they have displayed at home. I'll go with Columbus on the puckline and the UNDER here.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have really dropped off over the last 21 games as they have come out on the right side of just nine of them.  This club is obviously not the same one we saw last year, or early on this year. The Islanders are also not the same club that dropped eight of their first nine. This is a severe overlay as the Islanders have not been +200 in any game this season since their third game of the year vs the Bruins. Pittsburgh is simply not playing well enough right now to justify such a huge line either. I'll back the Islanders who are highly valued at these misrepresented odds.

The Penguins are severely overpriced in this contest as mentioned on my moneyline writeup.  The same case is made on the puckline as well. The Penguins have played poorly over their last 21 games. That stretch of 21 games has seen them winners on a would be -1.5 puckline just five times, or less than 25% of the time, certainly not even close to the odds posted in this one. I'll go with the Islanders here on the puckline.

The Thrashers have rebounded on the road after dropping eight straight and have won a pair in their last six. Avalanche have been playing a lot of low scoring games while the Thrashers can score and have held their own defensively allowing 2.6 goals in their last 13, so a 3-2 game here or a 2-2 OT game seems to fit what has been happening. Thrashers are well rested and have gone 6-2 off of three days rest. They have also had the Avalanche's number as they are 3-1-1 in the last five meetings. Colorado has played under in 11 of their last 16 and also 8-3 under vs a team with a losing record. Good spot for a low scoring tight game.  I'm riding Atlanta and the UNDER here.

The Thrashers are not a good team, but even mediocre teams have a place where they excel. For the Thrashers that has come when they have had a lot of rest and off of three days rest they are 6-2 in their last eight. This one figures to play low and tight, so the puckline holds an advantage, especially getting the plus side of it with a team in a good situation and one that has also gone 3-1-1 in the last five played in this series. Atlanta on the puckline.
