Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Florida at Carolina (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Florida +110 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.3)

The Carolina Hurricanes have had a topsy turvy season, and were really done in by an elongated winless streak. Overall they have been a poor team, even at home as only four teams in the entire league have fewer home wins than they do. Florida is usually a much larger dog on the road, but when posted at +125 or less they are 3-2 in their last five. A similar range for the Hurricanes as a favorite has shown very unfavorable results. Carolina is just 3-9 in their last 12 as a favorite of -110 to -150. It’s hard to back this Carolina team in the role of a small favorite, while the Panthers are playing over 50% in the case of a small dog. The value rests with the Florida Panthers here, so I'll grab them as a live dog.

The Ottawa Senators saw their long streak without a loss broken on the road. They have played much better at home and have been tough to stop here as they have scored 3 or more goals in 22 of 33 home games, or 67% of the time. That means the Flames are likely going to have to score some to win this one. The Flames have also produced 3 or more goals in over half their road games, making this total set at 5 suspiciously low, especially with Calgary playing 7 of 10 vs. the Northeast to the OVER, and Ottawa 5-1 to the OVER vs. the Northwest, and also 12-5-1 to the OVER on two days of rest. I like this one to go OVER the total.

Blackhawks put an end to their first 3 game winless stretch of the season, behind superb net play allowing just 1 goal, something that has carried this team all season. They will be back on home ice where they have allowed just 12 goals in their last 7 games, under 2 a contest. The Stars have been lousy on the road this season, where they have just 1 win since Decenber 11th, and have scored a total of 1 goal in their last 2 road games. Dallas having trouble scoring vs the big teams, as a big dog, leading to an 11-5-1 under mark in their last 17 as a dog from +151 to +200, and 13-6 to the under after a win. Chicago is now 18-6 to the under in their last 24 home games, with the last over coming in Chicago over a month ago. I like this one to stay under the total.
