Free Hockey Pick - February 07, 2009

We missed the mark on our two plays last night. Today we are back on the ice with four premium selections including a 5-unit pick.

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Buffalo at Ottawa (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on Ottawa -104 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 4.8)

The Senators are having a tough time lately as they have now dropped four straight games. The good news is that they have been knocking on the door with three of their losses by a single goal, and overall they have done a good job on home ice. The Sabres have been inconsistent on the road and just 4-5 over their last nine on the highway. This is a bad spot for them as they are playing their third game in four nights where they are just 5-16 in that situation the last 21 times it has come up. It doesn't help them that it is coming up against the Senators as they are just 5-11 in the last 16 meetings with Ottawa. I'll go with Ottawa in this one.

Game: New York Islanders at Tampa Bay (7:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Tampa Bay -142 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 2.8)
The Islanders started the season doing well on the road as they posted wins in five of their first 10 games. What has happened since has been brutal. The Islanders have won just one time in their last 15 on the road, so there simply isn't any value on this team especially with a low moneyline pinned on the Lightning in this one. The Lightning have dropped four straight themselves, but three of those were on the road. They return home for this one where they have been 3-1 in their last four. The Islanders are cashing just 24 of their last 78 as a road dog, and I don't expect them to be cashing this one either. The Lightning gets the call.

Game: Colorado at St. Louis (8:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Game Total UNDER 6 -125 (risk 4 to win 3.2)

The only thing that is Blue right now is the opponents trying to score on St. Louis. The last six games have seen the Blues post two shutouts, and allow less than two goals a game on average. The Avalanche is coming off an extended home stand of eight games and must take to the road for the first time since mid-January. That might be bad news as the Avalanche has netted just 18 goals in their last 10 road games or 1.8 per contest. Combine those numbers with the fact that these teams have produced a record of 9-3-1 to the UNDER in their last 13 meetings and we have an UNDER in the making, and that's the call here.

Game: Chicago at Vancouver (10:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 5.5 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The Canucks have been one of the NHL's most consistent teams as they have done pretty much equally well either at home or on the road. The Blackhawks are now in their sixth road game in a row, and they will be apt to be slowing down here. They have really been a low-scoring team in the role of a favorite where they are 10-1-1 to the UNDER in their last 12 as a chalk. Vancouver plays right into that hand with their own 10-4 mark to the UNDER in their last 14 as a dog. Plug in the fact that the last 10 meetings have seen just one over between these two, and none of the last six in Vancouver have gone over. There is only one way to go here and that is UNDER.

Results: 3-1
