Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Vancouver at Ottawa (7:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Vancouver -120 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.5)

The Senators have won ten in a row and they are at home against a team that owns a losing road record. Yet, Ottawa is the underdog. Smell fishy? Yes. This is a trap game. The public is lining up on the "easy" play on Ottawa. I'm going the other way. Vancouver beat Ottawa in both meetings last year and they've won six of the last seven in the series. Vancouver is 40-27 vs. winning teams the past two seasons. I think they get up for this game and win it.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have done some winning of late. But most often they find themselves needing a shootout or overtime to get it done as has been the case in half their wins over the last 3+ weeks. The Islanders have dropped five straight, but have been a better hockey team than the one that started the season at 1-, as they have hovered around the .500 mark since. The Lightning are just 53-108 in their last 161 games, and 18-49 off of one day of rest. They are 19-40 vs. an opponent with a losing record - hardly numbers that warrant favorite status. I'm going with the NY Islanders in this one.

Laying a goal and a half on a team that is 53-108 straight-up in their last 161 certainly becomes a dangerous proposition. Add in their futile mark against losing teams at 19-40, and their performance off a single day rest at 18-49 and things certainly take on value from the other side at +1.5 for the Islanders. Looking at Tampa Bay in that favorite role shows them winning one of their last nine by more than a goal. The value is on the Islanders here on the puckline.
