Hockey Predictions - April 23, 2009

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: Philadelphia at Pittsburgh (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Pittsburgh -200 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 1.5)

The Pittsburgh Penguins have controlled the Flyers en route to a 3-1 series lead. They may have had a letdown heading to Philly up 2-0, but if there were any doubts about the better team, they were resolved quickly when the Pen's took game four by a 3-1 count. They have scored three or more goals in all four games, and seven straight overall, and have now won six straight at home. The Penguins won't be playing to a letdown here, as they have a chance to close out the series in five games on home ice. The Flyers two road losses in this series has left them with a 14-37 mark in their last 51 games against teams with a .600 home winning percentage or better. The Flyers have a poor reputation and history in Pittsburgh where they are just 2-15 in their last 17. Pittsburgh closes out the series tonight.

This has been a competitive series and is tied at two games apiece, but despite a 1-1 split in the first two games played in New Jersey, the Devils have been the better team. They have out-shot the Hurricanes 73-51, and have controlled the face offs by a +10 margin. This hasn't exactly been the best spot for the Hurricanes who are now 3-12 as a dog of +110 to +150, while it has been a huge spot for the Devils, who are 38-14 in the same moneyline range, as well as being 24-8 in their last 32 as a favorite. I look for a repeat of game one, where the Devils dominated from start to finish and will go with them here.

The Ducks got off to a 2-0 start in this series by doing the unthinkable - winning a pair at The Shark Tank. They then come home and drop game three. The Sharks play a much more wide-open game on the road, as we saw in their 4-3 victory in game three, but also in their last eight road games where they have allowed an average of three goals per game. Anaheim is ready to accommodate that style as they have netted the puck 26 times in their last seven at home good for 3.7 per contest. The Ducks have played to the OVER in seven of their last 10 as a home dog. I look for this one to outscore the posted total and will play OVER here.
