Free Nhl Predictions - April 09, 2008

We enter the playoffs on a mini 4-2 run (+4.6 units). We are glad to see the playoffs here as last year we made a killing in the post season, going 45-22 (67%) for +29.2 units. We start off this year's action with two Wednesday picks.

Today's NHL Hockey Picks:

Game: New York Rangers at New Jersey (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on New Jersey -125 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 3.2)

Our top pick of day one comes in what is supposed to be the toughest game to call. We really like New Jersey here. The Rangers were swept by the Devils in 2006 in the last playoff meeting. This season the Rangers went 7-0-1 vs. New Jersey but three of those games went to OT so the games were much closer than it appears. Martin Brodeur should have great success against a weak Rangers offense. New York was just 17-24 on the road this season and limped in playing poorly. New Jersey in contrast won four of their last five games and were very solid at home. New Jersey takes game one.

Game: Colorado at Minnesota (9:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Minnesota -130 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.3)

Colorado missed the postseason for the first time since moving to Colorado last season. They are back and so are some of their old stars including Avs legend Peter Forsberg. But will it be enough? This is not the same Forsberg that won championships in 1996 and 2001, or the same Avs. Forsberg is older and hobbled by a groin injury. Minnesota won their first division title and they will be motivated, looking to atone for a first-round exit last season. Colorado has always been very good at home but the road is a different story. 27-14 at home, they were just 17-24 on the road this season, scoring a paltry 2.5 goals per game. Minnesota's defense was awesome all season at home (2.2 goals per game allowed). Colorado is 0-9 this seaon on the road off a home win in which they scored 4+ goals. We like Minnesota here.
