Game: Wake Forest vs. Louisville (Tuesday 1/02 8:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 1 unit on Wake Forest +10
This will be the first Bowl game for Wake Forest since 2002. That year they beat a good Oregon team. For Louisville, Bowl games have just become a feature of the end of the season. Louisville has gone 39-7 during the regular season now over the past four seasons, and always seems to be on the cusp of greatness or within striking distance of the National Championship, and fall short. This year the blemish was to Rutgers after leading virtually the entire game. Wake Forest is writing its own Cinderella story this year and there will be no doubt the mindset here will be a stronger one than Louisville's. Louisville has shown they have the ability to drastically underachieve come Bowl time. Louisville has been in Bowls the last four years, only to drop 3 of 4 and all four to the pointspread. They have been outscored by 51 points in all. Wake Forest has won their last three Bowl games, and covered them all. This will be the biggest game a Wake Forest team has played perhaps ever,. Meanwhile for Louisville, it will be yet another disappointment Bowl, as National Championship aspirations went up in smoke with a bad second half at Rutgers. We look for Wake Forest to hang tough in this one and the double digit point-spread looks good.
Game: Lsu at Notre Dame (Wednesday 1/03 8:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 2 units on Notre Dame +9
This could be another team disappointed to not be playing for a National Championship in LSU. This will also be the last chance for Brady Quinn to win a Bowl game. The one thing that stands out for us in this one is what has happened to LSU since they lost their first game, and the National Championship potential had slipped away. Their first 8 games saw this team beating up on everyone scoring 36ppg while giving up just 8.3. The last four games they have been reduced to scoring 27.5 ppg, but giving up 21 ppg. They have lost 8.5 points of offense and 13 points of defense, or nearly 21 points a game. We believe this is a result of the improved competition coupled with less intensity from the Tigers. They have played against five Bowl teams and have gone 3-2, with two of the three wins by 4, and 5 points. The only Bowl team they beat by more than this point-spread is Alabama, who lost its Bowl game and finished under .500 at 6-7. Notre Dame has a very explosive offense, and we expect that to keep them in this game. If LSU plays without intensity, as they have shown late in the season, Notre dame could even steal one here. Go with the Fighting Irish.
Game: W. Michigan at Cincinnati (Saturday 1/06 12:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on W. Michigan +7
Cincinnati is a much bigger favorite in this game than they ever should be thanks to their win against Rutgers. We were on Cincinnati big in that game but not because the Bearcats are a great team. Rutgers was coming off their biggest emotional win ever and as expected came into Cincinnati flat as a pancake. Cincinnati has had a good season, but this is not a highly motivational spot playing against W. Michigan. W. Michigan on the other-hand, will be in their first Bowl since 1988. This game means everything to them. They are here because they saved their best for last, going into the Rubber Bowl, and manhandling Akron 17-0, holding them to 132 total yards. Defense has been W. Michigan's calling card all season. They went into Doak Campbell, an impossible place to play, and out-gained Florida State while losing by 8 points. Cincinnati also had a shot vs Akron, only at home, and prevailed by just 6 points. We see the line value in this game favoring W. Michigan, as the public can only remember that Cincinnati beat Rutgers. We will jump in on the dog.
