Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:
Game: Detroit at Depaul (2:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Depaul -6 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)
The record for Detroit might say 4-1, but they have had a very soft schedule early, after getting pounded by 34 points vs. Cal. This team has taken a hit after being a top program for quite a few years. They are nowhere near that type of team now. DePaul took its lumps in the Big east, but this team is vastly improved with wins over St. Joe's and Northern Iowa as well as a four-point loss to a very good Tennessee team. The talent difference here is quite wide, and I'll go with DePaul in this one.
Game: Detroit at Depaul (2:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 5 units on Depaul -270 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 1.9)
The Detroit Titans used to be a top Midwest program, but a few years ago there were some internal problems and their best player left the team, and things have just not gotten any better. They are 4-1 to start the season, but the reality is that they played one notable team in California, and were dumped by 34 points. DePaul is playing very well, and much improved from a year ago as they have already beaten what is expected to be a NCAA Tournament team in a very good Northern Iowa squad, and lost by just four to a very good Tennessee team. They have also beaten an always good St. Joe's team, so the Deacons can play. The Titans have some wins vs. soft teams, but they are stepping up a few notches here and they don't have the talent to do so. I'll go with DePaul on the moneyline.
Game: George Mason at Tulane (2:10 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on George Mason +1.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
George Mason gives you one thing every time they take the court. They are well coached, disciplined and give a full effort every night. They have already caused problems for a very good Villanova team, taking a buzzer beater by the Wildcats to steal the win, and they have given Georgia Tech a tough time losing by eight, while beating Indiana. While there is no star on the team, they run 8-9 deep with equal ability and play fundamentally sound. Tulane is 1-3, and have played some tough teams, but the bottom line was they lost to them both by an average of 18 points per game. George Mason is giving good teams fits, and taking them deep into the game before losing. There is more talent on the dog here, so I'll go with George Mason in this one.
Game: Oregon State at George Washington (2:15 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on George Washington -7 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)
The Oregon State program is a disaster. They may be from a named conference, but they certainly aren't the quality of a typical Pac-10 team. They did not win a conference game two years ago, and only managed seven last year, but this team is going backward again. They lost to Texas A&M Corpus Christi by 24 points, and lost to a Sacramento State team that is horrible on their own court as a 21-point favorite. George Washington is off to a quick start and Karl Hobbs has his team back after a couple of down years. This might be the A-10 vs. the Pac-10, and the Pac-10 is the noticeable conference here, but the talent is on the side of George Washington, so I'll take them and lay the points.
Game: St. Francis, Pa at Ohio State (5:30 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Ohio State -35 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
What can I say here? Like Kansas yesterday, St. Francis is here for a paycheck and not a competitive game. Ohio State will out-man this team 10 deep, so the margin, just like in the Kansas game yesterday is apt to grow in the second half as secondary players come in trying to impress and earn minutes. There isn't much to say about the talent level here. There is no match, but these games have a tendency to go beyond embarrassing with the secondary players fighting hard, and are also more talented than the competition. Ohio State by plenty.
Game: Northern Illinois at Northern Iowa (8:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Northern Illinois +17 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
I really like the experience of this Northern Iowa team, and they can play some good basketball. But something seems to be missing early on as they have struggled vs. teams they should be handling with relative ease. They have already lost to DePaul and played East Carolina to a six-point game and Denver to a six-point game - teams they should handle easily. Northern Illinois is another team they should handle easily, but at the same time, Illinois and Northwestern beat this team by just 22 and 19 points and so far this season, we haven't seen anything out of the Panthers that resemble those clubs. I believe this one is a lot more difficult than it looks, so I'll grab the points here.
Game: Eastern Washington at Idaho (10:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Eastern Washington +15.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
Mark Dunn has stepped up, giving the Eastern Washington Eagles a much needed third scorer to compliment Valentine and Moore. The Eagles are used to winning, and have missed the Big Sky Tournament for two straight years, and may have enough to end that drought with JUCO players filling the missing roles from a year ago. Idaho went from winning eight, four, and eight games to winning 17 a year ago, and should be able to be in that same range again this season, but I don't see them as this big of chalk this early in the season vs. a team with capable scorers. They were only able to beat Sacramento State by 14, who is certainly a notch below the Eagles, so I'll grab the points in this one.
Results: 3-4
