Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:
Game: Arizona State vs. L S U (2:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 128 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
ASU and LSU square off in the consolation game in the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. The Sun Devils disposed of four weak opponents to open the season and then ran into Duke last game, falling by 11 points and scoring only 53 points. LSU had a similar experience. They opened with three straight double-digit victories and then had to face UCONN. The Tigers scored just 55 in a 26-point defeat. This line is an overreaction to the bad games put forth by both clubs last game. LSU shot 36.5% from the field and that won't happen again here. Arizona shot 38% - same comment. Neither of these teams has the defense of Duke or Connecticut. These are both solid teams with good offenses and I like this one to go OVER the total.
Game: Nevada at Virginia Commonwealth (7:30 PM Eastern)Pick: 5 units on Virginia Commonwealth -260 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 1.9)
The Nevada program was really going and they had some NBA-caliber players, but things are going backwards now. Coach Mark Fox left the program to take the Georgia job. Unfortunately he lost two good players to graduation, another that transferred out, one to discipline, and one to an injury, so this team is going to really be challenged to reach the 20+ wins of the last five seasons. They will have their hands full with the Rams who are projected to be the kings in the Colonial Conference this season. They lost a couple of good players, but return some good pieces, and a top recruiting class is entering as well. Some tough breaks for the Wolfpack, so I'll grab VCU on the moneyline.
Game: Virginia Tech at Temple (8:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Temple -4.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The Hokies went 19-15 a year ago and had some good moments, but with the best player gone from that time, it is going to take some time to find some answers and who the go-to guy will be. Early on, those struggles have been evident. Despite a 3-0 mark to start the season, the soft touches have given the 20-point favorite Hokies a hand full. Temple is a point away from starting 4-0 themselves, but when you consider their schedule has included Georgetown (the one point loss), and Siena, who is going to be a Tournament team, they appear to be way ahead of the Hokies right now. The Owls are always a play-on team because they bring it every night on the floor and that has led to a 38-18-1 ATS mark in their last 57. They are my choice in this one, Temple gets the money.
Game: Tennessee Tech at Kansas (8:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Kansas -35 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
This might look like a ridiculous number, but Kansas has no drop off as they are 10 deep in their roster. While this one may get out of hand early, when the next five come in for the Jay Hawks, they are better than anything Tech can put on the floor, and this one could reach epic proportions. We have already seen Kansas wins of 36 and 50 points and this one is destined for the same. They had a 19-point lead on a decent Hofstra team and used a lot of bench players to win the second half by 15. They outscored Central Arkansas by 28 in the second half, so the back door is not open in this one - all it can do is add to the thumping. I'll lay the huge points here and go with Kansas.
Game: Weber State at B Y U (9:30 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Game Total UNDER 151 -110 (risk 4 to win 3.6)
BYU is taking no prisoners. They have won three in a row by double-digits and no team has scored more than 65 on them (in a road game in Hawaii). They have averaged just 57.2 points per game allowed. Weber State is going to find themselves smothered here and they will really struggle to score. That puts a ton of pressure on BYU to push this game over a lofty total. With Weber struggling to reach 60 points, I like this game to go UNDER the total.
Game: New Mexico at Hawaii (11:55 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on New Mexico -8.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
Hawaii has a pair of wins vs. a very soft schedule. The most revealing in their 2-2 start is a loss to Northern Colorado and getting exposed by a solid BYU team. New Mexico has been much better than advertised off to a 5-0 start and is also 5-0 ATS. They have played above the pointspread by almost 30 points in their last two. It has been a complete team effort in all phases and what stands out is 94 assists to just 40 turnovers, so they are moving the ball well and taking care of it at the same time. The Warriors are no threat vs. the Mountain West where they are 1-11 ATS in their last 12. The Lobos are not eating much chalk as they are winning when they should by more than expected at 37-17-1 ATS in their last 55 as a favorite. New Mexico gets the call in this one.
Results: 3-3
