College Basketball Picks - November 24, 2009

We hit with our 5-unit play last night en route to a 2-0 day for +7.3 units. Yesterday's double-dip boosted our three-day college hoops run to 7-0 over the last three days, good for +20 units. Today we feature four premium picks including a 4-unit play.

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: U C Irvine at Eastern Kentucky (6:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Eastern Kentucky -8 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Anteaters were humiliated by Texas-San Antonio by double-digits last time on the floor. They definitely have missed the three-point shooting of Brett Lauer. The Anteaters have connected on just 16 of 52 for 30%, but the key is just 13 attempts a game. Teams are going to play the paint, take away the lane and force them to hit some jumpers, and until they prove they can, there will be some long nights. The Colonels are facing similar issues with the departure of sharp shooting Mike Rose, who connected on 48% from deep a year ago. The difference is that the Colonels have found plenty of answers as they have hit 40-81 for just under 50% from deep through three games. That will be lethal vs. a team that is still trying to find something outside, and are getting bottled up inside because of it. I like Eastern Kentucky with the win and cover.
Game: Charlotte at Hofstra (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Hofstra -3 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Hofstra Pride, despite a poor shooting effort on the road vs. UConn, played the No. 13 ranked Huskies to within nine points and actually led midway through the second half by nine before they went cold. They out-rebounded the Huskies as well as having had more assists. They will take on a Charlotte team that is 3-1 but does not have shooters. Last year's 41% shooting team was even worse through three games until they met a weak Yale team. They will get a lot more resistance in this one and their poor shooting will be their demise. The Niners are not road warriors as they are 8-22-3 ATS in their last 33 as a road dog, while the Pride are 5-0 ATS after a 20-point win or more, and 8-2 ATS at home vs. .600+ teams. Hofstra gets the call here.

Game: Loyola Maryland at Dartmouth (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Loyola Maryland -5.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Dartmouth Big Green are showing warts again early and are off to an 0-3 start. They have no one that has stepped up to even average double-digits on the season, and no one has even earned the right to play more than 27 minutes per night. Most of the time that shows team depth, but in Dartmouth's case it is a search for quality minutes that just aren't there. Loyola, MD will have the top three shooters and scorers on the floor in Harvey, Barney, and Walker as the trio is all hitting over 40% from deep. It will be very difficult for a Dartmouth team that has established no continuity on the floor yet, and has no one to step up when things go cold. Loyola has the better shooters in this one, so I'll ride them here.

Game: Florida State at Florida (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Florida -170 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 2.4)

The Gators and the Seminoles both come into this one with perfect 3-0 marks to start the season, but neither team has faced a serious challenge yet. Florida State won 25 games a year ago, but must replace Tony Douglass and that won't be easy. The Noles have a solid front court, but lack experience in depth in the backcourt. That experience is needed the most on the road and early on. With this being the first road test, it will be a challenge against good competition. The Gators have lost six players early to pro contracts over the last three years, but have some talent returning and they will also get Georgetown transfer Vernon Macklin. Kenny Boynton, the highly touted freshman guard, is where the Gators will have the edge as he is already at 19 points per game and Macklin has provided double-digits as well. I'll go with Florida on the moneyline here.

Results: 3-1
