Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: T C U at Nebraska (4:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Nebraska -6.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Nebraska Cornhuskers reside in one of the top conferences and it is a given that they will face a lot of losing situations inside the Big 12. What Doc Sadler has brought to this program is stability and improvement as they have improved each year in the Big-12 under his direction. Sadler is a preacher of defense and recruits kids that buy into it, so they have a tendency to be able to stay in games. Jim Christian did a good job getting the Frogs to 14-17 in his first year, but there is a lot of work left to be done. The Frogs were just 5-11 in the conference and are still short the necessary talent to compete. Zvonko Bulgan is a good player, but the help is a long way from providing the basis for a winning team. Heading on the road vs. a tough home-court opponent that plays sticky defense isn't a good place for TCU. I'll go with Nebraska in this one.

Game: Dartmouth at Furman (7:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Furman -7.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Dartmouth Big Green won just two games outside the Ivy League but finished 7-7 in the conference and surprised most. That is unlikely this season as they have lost the player that carried them all season, have no backcourt depth and a lot of question marks. They are likely to bring up the rear in the Ivy this season. Furman had a disappointing season, but it was one where the injury bug devastated this team, and they were forced to use 11 different starters over the season. Not too many teams can handle that. The good news is that this team gained a lot of depth and experience and returns the bulk of those players. They are healthy, and while Dartmouth will struggle early finding points, the Paladins have more answers. Furman gets the win and cover here.

Game: The Citadel at Missouri State (9:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Missouri State -4.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

Missouri State’s cupboard was left bare and Cuanzo Martin inherited a mess. Add in some injuries to a team already thin in talent, and nothing good was going to happen. Last year’s 40% shooting team will have some players ready to make that a distant memory, and his style is defense, so there will be marked improvements in both areas, plus he is now filling the roster with his players. The Citadel made the best improvement of any team in the country a year ago, going from six wins and a league doormat to a 20-win team. That won't be repeated. There will be eight new faces and history has shown this team to be more tuned to the bottom of the Southern Conference than the top. Missouri State gets this one.

Game: Southern Illinois at U N L V (10:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on U N L V -375 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 1.3)

Southern Illinois had a great run in the MVC and NCAA Tournament for a few years, but the program has slipped. The Salukis finished under .500 in the MVC a year ago and a home court that dominated opponents for most of the decade wasn't held anymore as they dropped six at home. UNLV had a disappointing season a year ago as they were picked to win the Mountain Conference and finished a distant fifth with no NCAA bid. This team has a couple of big school transfers from UCLA and Kentucky which will immediately make them better. While the potential might not be as great as last year, the prospects of achieving it are. The Salukis are down and UNLV wins this one.

The Duke Blue Devils ran out to a 34-point win over NC Greensboro, and I expect more of the same vs. Coastal Carolina. There was certainly more talent on the court for NC Greensboro, than the Dukies w...
