Ncaa March Madness Bracket - January 18, 2009

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: Marist at Loyola Maryland (12:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Loyola Maryland -185 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 1.6)

Two bad teams, both at 7-12  meet up here. The difference will be the location. Maris is 2-9 on the road. Loyola MD is nearly .500 at home. Even though they aren't very good, this Loyola team beats the teams they should as they are 11-4 straight-up dating back to last season vs. losing opponents. Under head coach Jimmy Patsos, they are 20-14 in home conference games. While I don't necessarily trust them to get it done against the spread, I like Loyola to win this game.

How can a 9-7 team have any chance at a 15-1 team? Well, this UConn team did fall to Georgetown. I'm not saying Connecticut is going to lose this game, but this is too many points, especially for a team that has only won four games ATS in their last nine. Seton Hall has covered two straight games as underedogs, playing very well vs. Villanove and at Notre Dame. These teams haven't seen a spread this big in over 11 years! Yes, UConn will score here. But, Seton Hall won't be shut down. They are averaging 77 per game (81.4 over their last five games). The Jim Calhoun-led Huskies are just 59-73 ATS as a double-digit favorite. I like the Pirates here.
