Free College Basketball Pick - January 17, 2010

We posted another winning night on the college hardwood last night as we went 6-5. Over the last month and a half our CBB picks are 107-74 at just under 60% for +96 units.

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: Bowling Green at Kent State (2:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Kent State -10.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

Kent State is 5-1 at home while Bowling Green is just 3-5 on the road. The Falcons have really struggled to score this season, averaging just 56.4 points per game on the road. Kent scores 76.5 per game at home so I am looking for a good old fashioned blowout in this one. Both of these teams faced Xavier this season. While both struggled to score, the defensive effort was telling. Kent allowed Xavier to score 77 but BG allowed 101. In their only other three games as a big underdog (9.5 or more), the Falcons lost all three games both SU and ATS. The average outcome in those games? BG lost 77-47 - an average of 30 points per game. I like Kent to get it done here.

Loyola has been a streaky team. In early December, they lost three straight, then won four in a row and again dropped three straight. They are off a win over Marist last game and can certainly give St. Peters a fight here. Loyola's problem has been offense, but they are facing a team here that is equally inept at scoring. This Greyhounds team is 30-14 ATS in their last 44 road games vs. teams making under 43% from the field. They are alos 19-6 ATS in their last 25 as a road underdog of 6 points or less and 37-19 ATS on the road coming off a win. Under head coach Jimmy Patsos, this team is 53-34 ATS as a dog including 42-21 ATS on the road in the pup role. Under Patsos, they are also 37-17 ATS on the road vs. conference foes and 12-4 ATS on the road vs. teams that score under 65 points per game. Meanwhile, the Peacocks are just 11-25 ATS in their last 36 home games vs. winning teams. I like the Greyhounds a lot here.

The Friars have been putting up some big numbers, averaging 83 points per game. Meanwhile their defense has been weak. As a result, they have gone 9-3 to the OVER. This line reflects that reality. But, they are playing a team that leans the other way here. Marquette is 6-4 UNDER including 3-1 UNDER at home, thanks to a stifling defense that has kept opponents to just 60.5 points per game here at home. In their last 31 home games vs. really good teams (.600 or better), the Golden Eagles are 22-9 UNDER. Under Buzz Williams, they are 12-3 UNDER when coming off a game that went OVER the total. I think this total is set too high.
