Ncaa Basketball Picks - January 12, 2010

We are 7-0 over the last couple of days and 19-5 (79%) over the last five days for +51 units. Over the last six weeks, our CBB picks are 91-63 (59%) for +81 units. Also, our 5-unit CBB picks are hitting 72% on the season at 23-9. Today, we feature five premium picks including our 5-unit Game of the Month.

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: Kansas State + Illinois at Parlay (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on Parlay -195 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 2.6)

I like Kansas State and Illinois to each win their games outright. Putting them together in a two-team moneyline parlay gets us reasonable odds. The No. 13 ranked Wildcats lost their first game in seven weeks on Saturday at Missouri. You can bet they will be up and focused for this matchup vs. the 12-3 Aggies. Texas A&M is great at home (9-0) but average on the road (3-3) and they will be running into a buzz saw here. K-State is 8-0 at home, winning by 22 points per game. After the loss, they will bring it here. Illinois is 9-0 at home and gets Penn State here. The Nittany Lions are just 2-4 on the road this season, managing just 61.5 points per game. That won't get it done vs. an Illini team that averages 83 per game at home. In games vs. real competition (lined games), Penn State has been bad this season, going just 2-7 thus far. Put these two teams in a moneyline parlay.

Both of these teams come in here even-up on the season at 8-8 apiece, so the winner cracks the .500 mark here as this becomes a pivotal game. The Frogs have had their problems, and have played well below the line as they are just 3-9 ATS in their last 12 lined games this season. The Cowboys have played three on the road and still looking for their first win away from home, but the competition has been tough and they have hung inside the number in two of the three, failing to get the money by just 1.5 points in the third. The Cowboys have been superb in the dog role as they are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 as a dog, including 5-0 as a dog of 6.5 or less on the road. The Frogs are showing no advantage at home at just 1-6 ATS this season. Under head coach Jim Christian, the Frogs are 0-8 ATS at home vs. teams that can shoot (those hitting 45%+ from the field). This dog has a pedigree, so I'll go with Wyoming here.

I like Wyoming's shot at a win here and with nearly 2.5-to-1 odds that spells a lot of value. The Cowboys are coming off a confidence-building win over San Diego State, a game in which 168 points were scored. Wyoming is 9-1 straight-up the past two seasons when coming off a game in which 155+ points were scored. They are also 11-3 over that span after playing a home game and 10-4 straight-up in those games including 6-1 after back-to-back home games. Dating back to last season they are also 8-1 vs. poor defensive teams (those that allow 45%+ from the field). TCU is 5-13 since last season when coming off a road loss including 1-9 if that loss was on the road. I like the Cowboys to pull off the shocker here.

The Panthers expected run to the top of the MVC standings and Championship is well underway. What comes with a 14-1 team that is unbeaten at home, are juiced numbers to tackle as witnessed by the large double-digit placement here. The Braves at 7-8 have proven to be a tough out however, as they played BYU to a 10-point game on the road. They also faced a top Oklahoma State team and lost by just 11, and took on the Illini on a neutral court, and came out a 4-point winner. The Panthers’ 12-game winning streak has them taking on inflated numbers, and they have not been highly successful in this range. The Panthers sit at just 2-7 ATS when posted at 13 or more. The Braves have done a good job here, covering five of the last seven and will keep this one inside the number, Bradley gets the nod.

Illinois has slowly begun building the program back up. The first thing that comes is restoring home dominance, and they certainly have done a good job of that. They have opened the season at 9-0 in Champagne. The Nittany Lions are too dependent on Taylor Battle - their only double-digit scorer. He is on the floor for 36 minutes per game, and the Illini will shut him down. The rest of the supporting cast just isn't good enough to make this one close. The Illini have a tremendous home-court advantage and feed off the energy, and without any answers beyond Battle, it will be a long night for the Nittany's. I'll go with Illinois in this one.
