Ncaa Basketball Pool Picks - January 07, 2009Our lone pick from last evening won. We are looking to add to that today with three premium CBB plays.  Today's NCAA Basketball Picks: James Madison is a much improved team from a year ago and after a big opening night loss to Davidson the Dukes have only sustained one loss by greater than 10 points and usually play tough and hang around. They have a quartet of double-digit scorers and hit their free throws, so they are capable of producing points in many ways. Gerald Lee who finished last season for Old Dominion in double-figures in 19 of his last 23 has not elevated his game at 14ppg. Part of the reason is the loss of guards Henderson and Johnson. The Monarchs are producing a lot less offensively, held to 66 or less in four of the last five. Dukes have enough firepower to hang inside of the big number here, and I'll back them with the points. Game: Davidson at Duke (7:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 153.5 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7) This Davidson team gained a lot of notoriety by their performance in the NCAA Tournament a year ago and they have been tormenting some good teams again this season. The difference is they lost Jason Richard, their PG that could set-up Curry for easy looks. This year Curry is on his own as he is setting up teammates and having to create his own shot which takes more time, especially against a sticky Duke defense. That was born to be the case vs Purdue, a top 20 defensive team that held the Wildcats to 58 points. Duke is always good defensively but lacks the firepower they have had in the past, but the totals don't reflect that. The last 25 out-of-conference games Duke has played have seen 16, or 64%, go under the total. This year in their last six posted with a total of 147 or higher, five have gone under and I like this one to go UNDER as well. Game: Northwestern at Wisconsin (8:30 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Northwestern +8 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6) Sometimes you don't know how much impact losing key players such as Butch and Flowers has impacted the Badgers. They are winning games but certainly struggling in many they shouldn't be. They have wins against Long Beach St. by seven, Iona by two in OT, Virginia Tech by two, Idaho St. by two and Penn St. by four. It's a team that struggles for long stretches on offense and they have only touched 70 on four occasions. Northwestern sports three players that can hurt you from deep in Coble, Moore and Thompson as the trio is averaging over 40% from beyond the arc and in a low scoring game can certainly provide enough punch to keep the Wildcats at an arms length, and I'll back them here with the points.
