College Hoops Predictions - January 06, 2010We missed the mark with our two picks on the college hardwood yesterday. Despite the setback we are still 72-58 for +30.2 units over the past month. Today we look to add to that with five premium picks including a 5 unit and two 4 unit selections.
![]() Today's NCAA Basketball Picks: This isn't one of coach Phil Martelli's vintage St. Joe's teams and they have to be feeling their oats dropping one at home to Princeton. I think they got caught looking ahead as these schools both reside in Philly, where the Big Five play every year, making it a huge rivalry game. Last year a mediocre St. Joe's team went to Villonova, also part of the Big Five in Philly, and lost by just three and dropped the game at Temple by just nine. Two years ago these conference foes played one point games in each. Throw the records out when these teams get together, as it is usually a war, as well as getting a bucket of points puts me on St. Joesph's here.Game: Fordham at Umass (7:30 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Fordham +15 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6) Umass is living in the public eye off their big win vs Memphis, but otherwise they have really shown nothing. The Minutemen struggled at Central Florida, losing by 17, and had Quinnipiac at home in a barn-burner where they held on to win by four. The Rams certainly are a beatable team, but if Umass can struggle against the weak teams, as they have, and play tough against the big teams, it shows they are one of those kind of teams that don't show up against the cupcakes allowing them to stay within the number. That might be the reason the Umass home mark of 2-5 ATS in their last seven is present. They have also not played a lined game at home this year as a favorite. I like Fordham to stay inside a lofty number here.Game: Princeton at Marist (7:30 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Princeton -4.5 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6) I'm not sure if I ever saw a 1-12 team playing against a team with a winning record, favored, but that is what we have here. Princeton isn't the force they were in the past, but went into Philadelphia vs an always tough to play Phil Martelli St. Joe's team and came away with an impressive eight point win. They were on a five game winning streak until they lost by two to Maine, making this line what it is although Maine isn't as bad a loss as it looks as they went to Uconn and gave the Huskies fits. Marist is similar to an Iona team a few years back that is going to struggle every single night and have a difficult time finding the win column. I don't think the right team is favored here and I'll go with Princeton.Game: Houston at Rice (9:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Houston -6 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7) The Houston Cougars have had some tough breaks of late falling on the road to the Big-12's Iowa St in overtime and they dropped their game before that to Texas San Antonio by a single point on the road again. That loss is not as bad as it looks as UT San Antonio can play and stands at 10-3. The Cougars other losses have come against some very good teams and they were in all of them. The Owls have a nifty 6-2 mark at home, but have yet to be tested the way they will here, aside from Texas who blew them off the floor. Owls just 4-10 ATS in their last 14 as dog will have an angry Houston team to deal with tonight. I'll go with the Cougars here.Game: Air Force at T C U (9:05 PM Eastern) Pick: 5 units on Air Force +9 (-110) (risk 5 to win 4.6) The Air Force had a long stretch of winning ten or less games a year, maybe on a good year would play .500, then they ran off several years of 20+ seasons. After stumbling a bit, this program is back to winning. They are clearly under the radar and that is why they enter here with a 5-1 ATS mark in their six kined games and have averaged close to 10ppg better than the line. TCU has already suffered five losses by double-digits and have run hot and cold, very typical of a .500 team. They have cashed just one of their last five as a favorite and I like Air Force who is playing above the level of the line posted here. They will hang inside this number. Results: 3-1 ![]() NCAA Basketball Picks Resources:
