Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: West Virginia at Notre Dame (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Notre Dame -2 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)

The Irish will open Big East play against West Virginia. Notre Dame has been one of the most difficult teams to play at home as they swept the schedule last year, and stand at 8-0 so far this season. They have run off 28 straight at home and seem to have West Virginia's number. The Irish have taken 12 of the last 13 from West Virginia, and not a single WVU player was even born the last time West Virginia won at South Bend! Irish have shot well, and are playing sticky defense allowing just 38% against them. WVU is playing well under coach Huggins, but have played a lean schedule, dropping both games against top teams. Hard to ignore history here and the fact that Notre Dame hasn't lost here in last 28. Giving just a bucket you have to ride the Irish in this one.

The Vikings are in a unique spot. The long-time doormats of the Horizon League are suddenly a good-sized chalk against a team that has beaten them 11 straight times and we think for good reason. It is tough to go on the road when the man taking the bulk of the shots is hitting just 35% from the field and is your top scorer. It's been a season-long problem for the Ramblers, barely shooting 40%. The Vikings have done some things that were unthinkable over the last decade. This year they already own wins over South Florida and Florida State They have eight wins already nearly matching last year's 10. Loyola is down this year and will have trouble being a factor in the Horizon, while Cleveland State may have enough to be in the top three. There is a lot of payback on the line tonight for 11 straight losses to Loyola, and Cleveland State finally has the better team and is at home, so we look for them to put a solid double-digit beating on Loyola.

Both teams have played well with Virginia posting a 10-2 mark and Xavier a 10-3 record. But this is a home game for Xavier who is 8-1 this season here scoring 84-points per game and outscoring opponents by 24 ppg. Virginia has a road loss and is outscoring opponents away from home by just 1.3 ppg. Xavier is coming off a trouncing of a good Kansas State team 103-77. They will be a confident bunch tonight in an important game. Virginia is just 23-60 in their last 83 road games against winning teams. Over the past three seasons they are 3-14 against teams that outscore their opponents by 4+ ppg and 1-10 on the road against teams scoring 77+ ppg. Xavier is 23-4 at home in their last 27 against good offenses (teams making 45%+ of their shots) and 13-3 in their last 16 against teams scoring 77+ points per game.

Marquette wants this one as they lost to Providence by an embarrassing 15 points in their Big East opener last year. This year they get their revenge. They are dominating nearly everyone as their lone loss was to Duke. Outside of that game they are crushing the competition. Their closest victory was a five-point win over Wisconsin - a game in which they were supposed to lose. Since then they have won four straight by an average score of 82 to 46! Yes, you read that right. Their offense is amazingly consistent as they have scored no fewer than 73 points in any game this season. Six of their last seven wins have seen them get to 80 or more. Providence is playing well but they are going to run into a buzz saw here. Providence is just 12-22 coming off three-straight wins. Marquette is 16-5 at home the past three seasons in lined games and 7-1 in their last eight coming off a great defensive effort (allowed less than 50 points). With this team allowing just 53.4 ppg at home, we also like the UNDER. They are 16-6 UNDER in their last 22 at home vs. teams at 60%+ SU. They are also 14-4 UNDER at home off a double digit win and 10-1 UNDER at home off 5+ straight home games. Under HC Tim Welshe, Providence is 20-10 UNDER coming off a game in which they scored 80+ points. They are also 13-5 UNDER on the road vs. teams that score 77+ ppg under Welsh.

Villanova is pouring in 80.5 ppg but they are allowing just 68.3. DePaul has struggled on defense but isn't likely to have as much offensive success as they are used to tonight. Depaul is 16-3 UNDER in their last 19 home games vs. top-lelve teams (those at 80%+ SU). Over the last two seasons they are 11-3 UNDER at home vs. teams that outscore their opponents by 12+ ppg. Villanova has played six games with a total between 150 and 160 the past three seasons. All six have gone UNDER. Under Jay Wright, this team is 9-1 UNDER to a total in this range.

Utah State is a perfect 8-0 at home this season and welcomes the Rainbow Warriors to kick off WAC play. Hawaii is a poor traveling team (3-9 away from home since last season) and will have their hands full here. Hawaii is allowing 85 ppg on the road while Utah State is giving up just 59 at home - a whopping 26-point difference. Hawaii is just 5-12 the past two seasons against teams that make 45%+ of their field goal attempts. Utah State is 16-2 as a home favorite the past three seasons and they take care of business in this one.

Northern Arizona comes into this game at 9-5, mostly due to an upgraded early schedule. Losses to Arizona, Utah State, Kansas and UNLV are not surprising. They have now gotten back on their level and have gone 5-0 (lost to Utah State in between). The Lumberjacks are carrying some lofty offensive numbers, as they shoot 47%, but when not playing the top teams they are shooting 267-533 or 50%. Makes it difficult for a poor shooting, poor offensive team like Eastern Washington that connects on just 38% against mediocre schedule. Eastern Washington does not take care of the ball either and offense is stagnant. They have committed 216 turnovers with just 164 assists, so severely negative. Lumberjacks have advantage on the boards as well, and allow just 41% shooting against. Complete mismatch here!
