College Basketball Favorites - February 27, 2010Our 5-unit picks are hitting 66% at 100-52 on the college hoops, NBA and NHL season. Today we feature another 5-unit play on an early game from the college floor. Last night we gave back a little over 1-unit, finishing 1-2. Overall, we are +34 units (173-151) over the last three months. Today we go with seven picks including a 5-unit and a pair of 4-unit plays.
![]() Today's NCAA Basketball Picks: The UAB Blazers have positioned themselves at 22-5 to get an at-large bid even if they don't win their conference tournament. They are not the type of team however to take down big numbers and this will be a challenge at mid double-digits. The Blazers have been a 10+ favorite three times this year and have failed to cover any of three. Tulane has dropped five straight games and going nowhere, but the Green Wave has been a lot more competitive than their record indicates. They have faced large lines of 14 or more three times this season and have covered every one of them. And they have not lost ATS in their last seven posted as a road dog. I'll go with Tulane here.Game: Bradley at Creighton (3:05 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Bradley +8 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6) The Creighton Blue Jays have been a player in the MVC and National Tournament quite frequently, but this is perhaps the worst team they have put on the court in over a decade, yet the oddsmakers continue to uphold their reputation. That has led to a 10-15-1 ATS record for the Jays. Bradley is on equal footing with the Blue Jays this year. Lately, arguably better, The Braves are 8-4 in their last 12, covering five of their last six, as well as six of their last eight as a dog. The Blue Jays are over-priced here as would be indicated by their 7-16-1 ATS mark in their last 24 vs. a team with a winning record. There is lots of value on the dog here, so Bradley gets the call.Game: Oregon at U C L A (5:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Oregon +6 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7) The UCLA Bruins were back in familiar territory for the past several years, getting deep into the tournament. That won't be the case this season as the Bruins have just a recent reputation, but limited talent and youth this year. The Bruins are below .500 for the season have already lost four in Pac-10 play at home as well as squeaking out 1, 2 and 4-point wins, so this line is high by reputation and not in tune with the reality of this squad this season. Oregon had little success on the road, but a big win vs. USC as a 10+ dog will have this team renewed, especially taking on the mighty Bruins who are less than mighty this season. The Bruins are just 3-10 ATS in their last 13 posted as a favorite of 6.5 or less. I'll go with Oregon here.Game: Murray State at Eastern Kentucky (7:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Game Total UNDER 134.5 -110 (risk 4 to win 3.6) Murray State saw their 17-game winning streak come to a halt at the hands of Morehead State. The Racers may play a bit soft today because of it, but always show up on the defensive end as no team form the OVC has topped the 70-points mark on them all season. Eastern Kentucky has held four of the last eight teams they have faced in the 50s, so they can get after it on the defensive end as well. That will be even more intense with the 26-4 Racers coming to visit. Murray State tends to increase the defensive intensity after a loss as they are 5-0 to the UNDER after a defeat. Eastern Kentucky is turning it up defensively against the better teams with a 6-1 UNDER mark in their last seven vs. a winning team and four of the last five in this series have failed to reach the total. I'll go UNDER here.Game: L S U at Auburn (7:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on L S U +8.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7) The LSU Tigers have yet to win on the road this season, and the talent level and experience on this team is at an all-time low. One thing that happens is that these bad, inexperienced teams take their lumps, but begin to improve. But the early body of work still shows a bad team and the lines fail to adjust as they improve late. The Tigers have covered three straight and got their first conference win, as well as losing another by a single point. They have replaced blowouts with competitive games. Auburn once 9-6 has fallen on hard times as they are just 4-9 in their last 13, and are not justified as a sizeable favorite here. Two of the four wins were by 1 point and 4 points. Teams heading in different directions in this one and the line has not compensated. I'll go with LSU here.Game: Providence at South Florida (7:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Providence +6 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7) The South Florida Bulls were playing as good as they have since joining the Big East. They had won five of seven, but they have quickly returned to their former selves, dropping two straight. It isn't that they lost two straight, it is the fact they lost by an average of over 20 points. This team has great difficulty scoring and that is the Friars’ forte. Providence has been over 70 in all but one Big East game. This is also a huge redemption game for the Friars who led South Florida by 8 with under a minute to play, only to cough it up and lose in OT. The Friars have covered four straight on the road as a dog of 6.5 or less and more importantly, they have gone 5-1 ATS in the last six vs. the Bulls. I'll go with Providence here.Game: Kansas State + N. Colorado at Parlay (8:00 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Parlay -135 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 3) Kansas State has won six straight games, putting them in position to secure a first-round bye in the conference tournament. In addition to that motivation, they have revenge to motivate them. The Wildcats have lost only four games this season, one to the Tigers. The problem for Mizzou here is that they are just 5-6 on the road this season. They don't have the offensive firepower to keep up with a motivated K-State team here. The Tigers are just 8-31 in their last 39 road games vs. teams at .800 or better. They are also 2-16 on the road in high-expected-scoring games with a total in the 150s. Northern Colorado visits Sacramento State who is just 5-6 at home this season, having lost nine of their last eleven games. The Bears are 11-5 on the road and they have won six of their last seven. This is simply a big mismatch. Put these two teams together in a moneyline parlay. Results: 2-4 ![]() NCAA Basketball Picks Resources:
