College Basketball Pick - February 23, 2008

Three picks today including a couple of Bracket Buster games.

“Dogs Steal the Favs” March Madness Pool at Cappers Lounge! Here’s your chance to get in on the most fun ways to play the NCAA March Madness pool – by stealing the favs! The cool thing about this pool is that if you take the underdog and your team covers or gets the push your team is out, but you are still in because you will steal the team from your opponent! You will then continue on as that Fav through the rest of the tourney. Sounds like a blast right? Teams will change hands after just about every round in this fast and furious take on the traditional March Madness Pool. Check out this link for all the details and rules.

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: Nevada at Southern Illinois (4:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Southern Illinois -6.5 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)

Nevada has slipped seriously since the good ole days of four straight league titles. They are solid at home this season (11-2) but weak on the road (6-7). The Salukis are 11-2 at home and 7-4 ATS, holding opponents to just 59.3 ppg here. They are off a 67-47 trouncing of Northern Iowa and this team is 17-7 ATS the past three seasons after allowing 50 points or less. Under head coach Chris Lowery, they are 31-18 ATs afer allowing under 56 points in their prior game. Southern Illinois is perfect in this building vs. division foes and we look for them to win and cover here.

Game: Vermont at N C Wilmington (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on N C Wilmington -7.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

This is far from the Vermont team that made a name for itself by knocking off Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament a couple of years ago. It is also a far cry from the 25-win NIT team of a year ago. The American East is one of the lowest-rated conferences this season and Vermont is barely at breakeven point in their own conference. A road loss at 5-21 Stony Brook this week says it all. NC-Wilmington has won seven straight at home in a much better Colonial Conference and stands at 11-5 in Conference play. The Seahawks can really score, as they have the No. 18-best shooting team in the country at 48.3%. The Seahawks also have three players that connect on over 40% from three-point range and just have too much firepower for a young and less talented Catamount team.

Game: Oregon State at U S C (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Oregon State +17 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)

OSU is just 6-20 overall so we are not surprised by this line. But, as is often the case with really bad teams, the Beavers play better on the road than at home. They are scoring 62.3 per game on the road while in the 50s at home. USC has had some scoring troubles of their own of late, averaging just 63.4 over their last five games. USC won on January 24 by a score of 68-44 so we look for them to take the Beavers lightly here. Note that teams revenging a loss in which they scored under 50 points, coming off a 20+ point loss are 70-33 (68%) ATS the past five seasons, as the line gets push too high. That's the case here as USC was an 8 point favorite in the first game and is now laying 17. We look for OSU to sneak in under the big number.

Results: 1-2
