Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:
Game: Davidson at Winthrop (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Winthrop +3 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 131 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The Wildcats have been roaring with 16-straight in the win column and this one looks easy as Winthrop lost most key pieces from a 29-5 NCAA tourney team last season. Not so fast! Davidson has not exactly blown-out competent teams on the road, as they have beaten lowly Elon by just two and close calls at North Carolina-Greensboro by five and Chattanooga by seven, as well as suffering losses to virtually all the good teams out of conference on the road. Winthrop is a better team than they were to start the season and even then, went to the Virgin Islands and gave No. 42 RPI Baylor fits, before losing by eight and won over Georgia Tech. They also went to Ole Miss, who was off to a 13-0 start, and lost on the Rebels court by just five. Eagles are 33-1 on their home-court last 34, with the only loss coming by four, and 57-2 going back to '03-04. Eagles are allowing less than 40% from the floor and just 31% from behind the arc. The Eagles also went into Miami and beat the 12-0 Hurricanes at the time on their own court. Both of these teams have played to high-scoring games in their top out-of-conference matchups. We expect this one to play in the 70s, so we will also ride the OVER.
Game: Cal Santa Barbara at Utah State (9:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 137.5 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The Aggies can really fill it up, but have been even better at home. Utah State has averaged 79.4 points per game in their last 10 at home. It isn't from a couple of big games it has been from consistency, as their lowest output has been 74. The Aggies are 11-2 to the OVER in their last 13 home games, and 23-7 to the OVER in their last 30 overall. Santa Barbara appears to play at a snail’s pace, but have to consider the road schedule they have faced. They have only faced two teams that score as much as the Aggies on the road, and those two games produced 159 and 175 points! The fact is that seven of their 11 road opponents average 67 points or less, and six of the 11 average 63 or less! We expect this game to soar over the total as the Aggies dictate pace on their home floor.
