College Basketball Pick - February 21, 2008
Another setback at 3-4 last night. Tonight we go with three plays...
Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:
Game: Virginia at Georgia Tech (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Virginia +5 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)
This young Tech team has hit the wall, dropping three in a row. What was once a team hitting 48% and 38% from beyond the arc, has only shot 41.9% and 27.4% in the three losses. Virginia finally breaks through on the road winning at Boston College after nearly pulling off the upset of Carolina at home losing by just one point. Virginia has lost three times in league play in OT, so they are certainly hanging around in games, and after getting a big road win the confidence level is returning. They should stick around in this one as well as Tech has struggled of late.
Game: Pittsburgh at Notre Dame (7:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 2 units on Notre Dame -4.5 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)
Both of these teams have 19 wins but there are two huge advantages for the Irish here. First off they are 9-3 in league play while Pittsburgh is just 7-5. This two-win difference against the tougher competition tells us these 19-win teams are not equals. Second, this game is at home for Notre Dame. Pittsburgh is just 5-5 on the road while the Irish are a perfect 14-0 at home, beating opponents by 18 points per game. The Panthers' strength is defense as they allow 62.7 ppg. But, on the road, that jumps to 66.7, and the Irish are on a 29-14 ATS run over teams that allow less than 64 ppg after 15 games.
Game: Middle Tennessee State at Denver (9:30 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Denver -3 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)
Denver needs this game. They have lost back-to-back games putting them in a multi-way tie for second place in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference. This team really struggles offensively, averaging just 63.8 per game at home. But, they have a 9-1 home mark both SU and ATS thanks to stifling defense. Despite such a low-scoring average, they are still beating opponents at home by an average of 10.5 ppg! MTSU has a relatively weak defense especially on the road where they allow opponents to hit 46.7% and score over 75 ppg. Denver feasts on such teams as they are 13-4 ATS at home over teams allowing 45%+ after 15 games. The Pioneers are 7-0 ATS this season as a home favorite. They are 8-2 ATS this season when coming off a sub 56-point performance and 11-0 ATS after scoring 65 or less in two straight games.
Results: 1-1
