Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:
Game: Miami Florida at Georgia Tech (1:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Georgia Tech -4 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
Georgia Tech has played the No. 16 highest-rated schedule in the country. And although the win column doesn't show it, this team is getting better and is very deep. They have played particularly well at home. They have home losses to Maryland by two points, North Carolina by one and Kansas by five points as well as a home win over Notre Dame. Miami zipped out of the gate at 14-1 due for the most part to a very weak schedule. The Hurricanes have fallen hard and fast as ACC play began and has been 2-6 since. Their road play shows four losses in five games, three of which were by double-digits. Georgia Tech is the better team, and they will redeem their earlier loss to the Hurricanes with a win today.
Game: St. Louis at Massachusetts (2:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 2 units on Massachusetts -8 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)
St. Louis is one of the ugliest teams in the country, as they have really put up some stinkers from a highly inconsistent offense. They scored just 20 points at George Washington. It was one of the worst performances in the shot clock era. They also have a 39 point game at BC, and a 40 point game at Kent State, and a 36 point game at Dayton. They allow just 53 ppg at home, but haven't been as efficient on the road where they have allowed 64 ppg. The problem is their road average is just 49 ppg. UMass has played the 17th toughest schedule in the country, and the one thing they can do is produce points. An offensively challenged St. Louis team will struggle to keep up on the road.
Game: Seton Hall at W. Virginia (2:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 2 units on Seton Hall +13.5 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)Pick: 2 units on Game Total UNDER 150.5 -110 (risk 2 to win 1.8)
Seton Hall has more than held their own on the road in the Big East - a tough job for anyone. They can score and they also get 10 steals a game. The Hall is averaging just under 80 points a game, and should be able to hang tough here. They have won at Villanova and Providence, and have hung tough on the road at Marquette (losing by 5) and Georgetown (lost by 12). After a 10-1 start, West Virginia has been quite ordinary at 7-6 in their last 13. They have not been able to cover a double digit spread in their last four. These teams are much closer than this, and we will ride the Hall to keep this one close. While the Pirates do score on the road, they also play good defense (better than at home) and it's one reason they are 7-4 UNDER away from home. West Virginia has been an UNDER team since conference play began, going UNDER in eight of eleven conference games. They have averaged just 65.5 per game in conference play vs. closer to 80 in non-conference games. They are averaging just 61.6 per game over their last five. We like the UNDER here too.
Game: Duke at Wake Forest (7:30 PM Eastern)Pick: 2 units on Game Total UNDER 151 -110 (risk 2 to win 1.8)
Duke is powerful. But the location of the games they play makes a huge difference. They score 90.9 ppg at home but just 78.9 per game on the road - a whopping 12 ppg difference. Meanwhile, their defense plays just as good. Wake scores 75.9 per game at home but keeps foes here to just 62.6 per game on 39.6% shooting! The last six times they hosted a winning team, their games have gone UNDER the total. We think this total is too high and we'll take the UNDER here.
Game: U C L A at U S C (10:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 2 units on U C L A -6 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)
UCLA has been stewing since dropping a game at Washington last Sunday. They will be ready for this game against their cross-town rival - a team that beat them earlier this year. The #6 Bruins have far superior talent this year, as they sport one of the best freshman classes we can ever remember. Kevin Love is averaging 60.8% from the field while pulling down 11 rebounds per game. Josh Shipp is averaging 14.3 ppg and Darren Collison is right be hind him at 13.9. They have yet another double-digit threat in Russell Westbrook. The point is, you can maybe stop one or two of these guys but if you do, the others will eat you up. The Washington performance was horrendous (1 for 16 from three-point land and a 1.8-to-1 turnover to assist ratio). With a week to prepare, the Bruins are going to come out with a purpose here - to show that game was a fluke. On top of that, they have revenge as a motive thanks to a 72-63 loss to USC in mid-January. UCLA is a perfect 7-0 ATS in their last seven attempts to revenge a loss as a 7+ point favorite. UCLA here.
