March Madness Gambling - February 14, 2010

We finished 3-6 yesterday, sorry about that. We return to the college hoops floor today with three 4-unit selections. Over the last two and a half months, our college hoops picks are 148-127 for +38 units.

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: Marist at Niagara (2:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Marist +21.5 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)

When these teams met a month ago, Niagara rolled to a 16-point victory. That can lead to complacency when getting the same team at home, especially when that the team you are facing is winless on the road. Yes, Marist is awful, but 20+ points in a rematch game is just too much. The reality is that Niagara struggles against poor shooting teams like Marist as the Purple Eagles are just 2-8 ATS this season vs. teams that shoot under 43% from the field. They are also 7-14 ATS as a favorite and 3-10 ATS when coming off a win (complacency). I like Marist plus the boatload of points here.

Ohio has not been good on the road, leading to a big line in this game. But, Akron is just a .500 team ATS at home and they have won just one game ATS in their last five (a road game). Ohio has won five of their last seven games straight-up and they have found some offense of late, scoring 89+ per game in their last two. I like that momentum and the confidence that comes with it to bleed into this game. This is a revenge game for the Bobcats who lost by just 5 in the first meeting. I like Ohio to keep this one close.

Toledo hasn't won a game on the road all season and they face a Central Michigan team that is 7-3 at home. But the Chippewas have been stumbling lately having lost three straight ATS and SU. In their last two games they were just 42-for-124 from the field. As is often the case with a really bad team like Toledo, lines get goosed eventually and what was a terrible play early in the season becomes a real value play later. Toledo started the season 5-12 ATS. "Horrible bet" was ingrained in the public's mind. But since then they are 5-0 ATS. This is another case of a line juice as asking Central Michigan to cover this spread is asking a lot. When these teams met a month ago, Toledo lost by 11 points. And, the Rockets are 8-1 ATS the past three seasons revenging a same-season loss. I like Toledo to keep this close enough to cover the large number.
