Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:
Game: Buffalo at N Illinois (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on N Illinois -2 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The Bulls have lost nine straight yet are somehow expected to keep this one close on the road, where they are 0-10 this season. We aren't buying it. They are off two straight OT losses which does not leave them in a good mindset for this one. They have to be asking themselves how they can possibly win. That kind of questioning breeds more losing. Buffalo allows 80 ppg on the road while shooting 38.1%. NIU is terrible offensively but they do hit 42.4% from teh field at home while holding foes to 63.1 ppg here. We like this spot to fade a terrible, slumping, losing team on the road without having to lay much.
Game: Drake at Illinois State (8:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Illinois State -4 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
It has been a magic carpet ride this season thus far for Drake as they have rattled off 19 straight. That will all come to an end tonight. It has been a season of narrow escapes for the Bulldogs as they have won by one point at Bradley, needed OT at Creighton and won by three at Evansville. They face their stiffest road challenge of the year coming to Illinois State tonight. The Redbirds have already given the Bulldogs a stiff challenge on the road, and led at the half before bowing by six. The Redbirds have a little streak of their own going as they are 11-0 at home and have won 13 straight here. They shoot well inside and out, and defend at under 40%. These teams match-up very well and with this being the biggest game of the year for the Redbirds and a marquee win with NCAA tourney implications, we look for the Redbirds to play their best game of the year and stay perfect at home.
Game: Indiana State at S Illinois (8:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Game Total OVER 116 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
Sure, Indiana State averaging just 58.4 ppg on the road this season. But, over their past five games they have managed 65 ppg. And, on the road this season they are giving up 72 ppg on 49.1% shooting. S. Illiinois averages 67.9 per game at home so they should get theirs tonight against this weak Sycamores defense. The Sycamores are 15-5 OVER the pats three seasons as a double-digit underdog and 13-4 OVER on the road off a game in which they failed to cover the spread. This total is too low and we'll take the OVER.
Game: Northern Iowa at Creighton (9:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Northern Iowa +6.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)
Made-for wins early this season saw the Blue Jays at 9-1, but the going has gotten much tougher and the Jays are just 6-5 in their last 11, including losses in three of their last four. The biggest problem has been off the glass where the Jays haven't out-rebounded any of the last four opponents and needed 52% shooting, and 57% from three-point range, to win at home against Wichita State. The Panthers are playing their best basketball of the season, with four in the win column in their last five. Narrow losses at MVC heavy weights Drake (four points) and Illinois State (five points) show that the Panthers can compete in hostile environments against better teams. Panther seniors have their last chance to log a win over the Blue Jays, as the four-year players are now 0-7 SU. Northern Iowa defends with the best of them allowing just 37% FG shooting against them, good for 7th in the NCAA. Panthers convert freebies at 74% and should stay close here.
Game: Colorado State at New Mexico (10:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on New Mexico -16.5 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)
Colorado State was not a good team early on, but when their seven-foot center Stuart Creason went down, they have been awful. The Rams have gone 0-8 without him and have even lost at home to Panhandle State. The season has left them 0-9 on the road losing by an average margin of 17.6 points per game. The Lobos are having trouble winning on road and will be focused after dropping their last two on the road. They have been blowing teams out at the pit, as their 12 wins have been by an average margin of 21.3 ppg. The Lobos are deadly in league play from deep, connecting on well over 40%, while the Rams are dead last at 25%. New Mexico is also the best in the league putting back the misses, leading the league in offensive rebounding while the Rams sit dead last in the conference off the glass. Major blowout potential in this one.
Results: 2-3
