Free Basketball Pick - December 31, 2009

We finished 4-3 last night in college hoops. Today we go with six picks total. Our 5-unit CBB picks are now 13-5 on the season and we are 57-47 for +23 units over the last three weeks in college hoops.

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: Middle Tennessee State at New Orleans (5:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Middle Tennessee State -5.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Privateers appear to be a good home club, dropping just one, but their schedule is extremely weak with two wins coming against teams below Div-1, and the other two vs. Houston Baptist and Texas State. The fact is that this team has dropped six in a row playing teams more on their level, including three straight ATS. It looks like a live home dog until you dig inside the numbers. Middle Tennessee has thrived in the role of road chalk as they are now 9-4 ATS in their last 13. The Privateers are reeling after taking a 10+ point loss at home at just 2-8 ATS in their last 10. I'll go with Middle Tennessee St. here.

How the mighty have fallen. The Quakers used to dominate the Ivy league and had the ability to hang with the big boys, but things have changed dramatically. The Quakers are off to a 0-8 start and are really struggling at the offensive end. The Duke defense will likely hold them under 50 here, meaning Duke is going to have to reach the century mark and beyond to push this one over, and with ACC play beginning in just four days, we’re not likely to see that here. The Duke defense has imposed its will on weak teams leading to an 11-1 UNDER mark in their last 12 vs. teams with a winning percentage under .400. I like this one to go UNDER the total.

Eastern Washington has always had the talent edge on most of the Big Sky teams especially at home, but it is becoming more and more apparent that this team does not. The Hornets are definitely closing the gap as the last two seasons combined saw them only garner six total wins, but have already matched that total this season. They had two of the losses by 1 and 4 points, so this team is much better than what we have seen here in quite some time, while Eastern Washington sporting one of their worst. The Hornets are getting it done on the road at 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven, while the Eagles, once dominant at home, have failed to cover in each of their last four. I'll go with Sacramento State here.

The Cougars come into this one at 10-2 as the schedule shows that they should be 10-2 as they have dropped the games on their schedule that were more suited to their strength. They have been favored in every other game except the two losses. The Ducks are young and coming, and have won four straight and gave a very solid St. Mary's team all they could handle. The Cougars have always had problems with the better teams as they sport an 8-17 ATS mark in their last 25 vs. a team with a .600 winning percentage or higher. I'll go with Oregon in this one.

This is an improved St. John's team and will head into this one at 10-2. The difference here is that they have only played two true road contests on the season, and Georgetown is an improved team as well. Don't forget that this is the same Red Storm team that jumped out to a 10-1 start last season, hit the Big East and were rudely awakened into reality. The Storm won just once on the Big East road. Georgetown has some business to take care of here as they lost at St. John's late last season and it will be payback time with a vengeance here. I'll go with Georgetown in this one.

This is still a good Gonzaga team, but is definitely down a notch from what we have seen over the last decade or so. The Bulldogs used to pushing the 50% mark in FG shooting percentage, but have just three of their top eight scorers over that mark. The Sooners have played up to poor competition, but vs. the likes of Arkansas and Arizona, the scoring was much more difficult to come by and I look for more of the same here. The Sooners are now 9-2-1 to the UNDER vs. teams with a winning home record while Bulldogs, after scoring 90+, have gone 15-9 to the UNDER. Defense is the calling card now for these rebuilding, but good teams, so I'll go UNDER here.
