Basketball College Pick - December 30, 2009

Today's NCAA Basketball Picks:

Game: Canisius at St. Bonaventure (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Canisius +9 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

After a four-game slide, Canisius has won two straight including a huge upset win over Southern Miss in which the Golden Griffins were an 11.5 point underdog! The Bonnies are heading the other direction, having lost two in a row and four of their last six games. Canisius is a decent road team, having gone .500 SU and 4-3 ATS. This team is 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games vs. teams that shoot 48%+ from the field. St. Bonny is 45-67 ATS in their last 112 as a favorite including 28-46 ATS at home. I like the Griffins here.

Davidson started off by losing seven of their first nine games. They were labeled as a bad team and now there is value on them, even as a favorite. Since that bad start, they have gone 3-1 SU and 3-0 ATS. In fact, they have lost just one game ATS in their last seven games. At home this team is 3-1, averaging 78 points per game and winning by 25 points per game! UMass is just 2-5 on the road, allowing 82 points per game. The Minutemen have gone just 4-12 ATS since last season in non-conference games. Take the Wildcats here.

This is the last warm-up for State before the Big Ten schedule starts. I don't expect them to expend too much energy on offense. They are 7-0 at home, allowing 60.9 per game. After allowing 79 points in a loss to Texas last game, I expect that the Spartans will play a good game on defense and they should really be able to hold the Mavericks down. The Spartans are 16-6 UNDER under Tom Izzo in home games following a road loss. I like this one to go UNDER.

Jacksonville is just 2-7 on the season, losing by 12 points per game on average. UCF is a perfect 6-0 at home (2-0 ATS), winning by 14 points per game. The Knights are coming off a 24-point win over Liberty. Home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points that are coming off a big game (covering the spread as a double-digit favorite) hit at a 62% ATS rate when playing a non-conference opponent. Central Florida will be too much for Jacksonville to handle.

I really like these three teams to get outright wins so I'm putting them together in a moneyline parlay at -190 odds. Louisville faces South Florida and the Bulls just don't have the offense to keep up with Louisville. The Cardinals are 25-5 in their last 30 at home after three straight wins. They carry the momentum to another win. Davidson gets a weak UMass team that can't play defense. The Wildcats are 20-5 straight-up in their last 25 games after three straight ATS covers. They should be able to handle the Minutemen with relative ease here. Finally, Maryland hosts William & Mary. The Terps are 6-1 at home this season, winning on average by 18 points per game. W&M is 34-117 SU over the past 15 years as an underdog including 17-70 on the road. They have only one December road win in the last 15 years! Take these three teams in a moneyline parlay.

The No. 25 ranked Wildcats are getting 8 points here. I love it. This is their first ranking in 41 years and there seems to be some non-believers still out there as they are a big dog to an unranked team here. But, Northwestern is better than they are getting credit for and I think this line is off by a couple of buckets. On top of it, Northwestern is playing with revenge here. These teams met last season (back in February of this year) in Evanston. Northwestern led that game 57-43 late in the second half, but ended up losing by 1 point. So we'll have a motivated Wildcats team here out to avenge that loss, and prove that they are deserving of their ranking. Northwestern is 10-1 (3-0 on the road) thanks to great defense as they have allowed just 58.9 per game. Illinois can score and they are tough at home, but there's no reason Northwestern can't hang here. Bruce Weber led teams are just 7-20 ATS at home after back-to-back ATS losses. I like the Wildcats in this one.

This one should be fun to watch as Providence averages 85 points per game and ND averages 84. The difference is in defense. The Friars allow 84.7 per game on the road while the Irish allow just 70 per game at home. Notre Dame is a superb three-point team as they average eight three pointers made per game on 42% shooting. That spells trouble for Providence as the Friars are just 8-27 ATS vs. teams that make 8+ threes per game. They are also 0-7 ATS the past two seasons vs. teams that make 37%+ of their long-range shots. I like the Irish to win and cover here.
