Today's NBA Basketball Picks:
Game: Philadelphia at New York Knicks (7:35 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on First Half UNDER 103.5 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
Under Mike D'Antoni, the Knicks are no surprise. They are going to come out running and gunning, and that makes for an opponent mindset to try to take control of the game tempo. Which means that early in the game it becomes a matter of will, but the focus early here by the Sixers is obvious - they will keep the Knicks from getting into a quick-paced offensive rhythm. The Knicks have struggled getting it going offensively as opponents have adjusted to their style. The Knicks have yet to reach 50 points in the first half of their opening two games. And for that matter, they haven't reached 100 points in regulation, and the Sixers will be in no hurry here. I like the first half to go UNDER the total.
Game: Detroit at Milwaukee (8:30 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Detroit +3 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)
This is a completely different team from what we have grown accustomed to in the past from the Pistons. They now are looking very much like the University of Connecticut turned pro as Hamilton, Gordon and Villanueva are all key contributors - and that isn't such a bad thing! The trio is averaging 56 points per game through the first two. The Bucks are limited offensively as outside of Michael Redd, there is no genuine scorer on the team. That leads to droughts, and the Pistons do one thing very well - defend. It will tough for the Bucks to stay out of scoring droughts and the added firepower of Gordon is going to make Detroit very tough on the perimeter with Hamilton on the other side. Depth is also an issue for the Bucks, and they have dropped four straight playing on the back end of consecutive nights. I'm going with Detroit here.
